Yusuf AliI do call to witness the Resurrection Day;

al-Qiyamah 075:002

75:2 ولااقسم بالنفس اللوامة


TransliterationWala oqsimu bialnnafsi allawwamati
LiteralAnd nor I swear/make oath with the self , the often blaming/reprimanding.

Yusuf AliAnd I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).
PickthalNay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
Arberry No! I swear by the reproachful soul.
ShakirNay! I swear by the self-accusing soul.
Sarwarand by the self accusing soul (that you will certainly be resurrected).
KhalifaAnd I swear by the blaming soul.
Hilali/KhanAnd I swear by the self-reproaching person (a believer).
H/K/SaheehAnd I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].
Malikand I swear by the self reproaching soul![2]
QXPNay, I call to witness the person who shows remorse after wrongdoing. (12:53. Notice the Law taking the first step instantly).
Maulana AliNay, I swear by the self-accusing spirit!
Free MindsAnd I swear by the soul which is self blaming.
Qaribullah No! I swear by the reproachful soul!

George Saleand I swear by the soul which accuseth itself:
JM RodwellOr that I swear by the self-accusing soul.

AsadBut nay! I call to witness the accusing voice of man's own conscience!



al-Qiyamah 075:003

75:3 ايحسب الانسان الن نجمع عظامه


TransliterationAyahsabu al-insanu allan najmaAAa AAithamahu
LiteralDoes the human/mankind think/suppose that We (will) not gather/unite his bones?

Yusuf AliDoes man think that We cannot assemble his bones?
PickthalThinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones?
Arberry What, does man reckon We shall not gather his bones?
ShakirDoes man think that We shall not gather his bones?
SarwarDo men think that We shall never be able to assemble their bones?.
KhalifaDoes the human being think that we will not reconstruct his bones?
Hilali/KhanDoes man (a disbeliever) think that We shall not assemble his bones?
H/K/SaheehDoes man think that We will not assemble his bones?
MalikDoes man think that We shall not be able to put his bones together?[3]
QXPDoes the human being think that We will not assemble his bones? ((36:78), (37:16). Life goes on without its essence, the 'Self', undergoing disintegration).
Maulana AliDoes man think that We shall not gather his bones?

al-Qiyamah 075:004

75:4 بلى قادرين على ان نسوي بنانه


TransliterationBala qadireena AAala an nusawwiya bananahu
LiteralYes/certainly We are capable/able on that (E) We straighten (recreate) his fingertip (finger print) .

Yusuf AliNay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.
PickthalYea, verily. We are Able to restore his very fingers!
Arberry Yes indeed; We are able to shape again his fingers.
ShakirYea! We are able to make complete his very fingertips
SarwarWe certainly have the power to restore them even the very tips of their finger.
KhalifaYes indeed; we are able to reconstruct his finger tip.
Hilali/KhanYes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers.
H/K/SaheehYes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.
MalikWhy not? We are able to put together, in perfect order, the very tips of his fingers.[4]
QXPYes indeed, Yes, We have the Power to restore even his finger tips with finger prints!
Maulana AliYea, We are Powerful to make complete his whole make.
Free MindsIndeed, We were able to make his fingertips.
Qaribullah Indeed yes, We are able to shape his fingerstips yet again!

George SaleYea: We are able to put together the smallest bones of his fingers.
JM RodwellAye! his very finger tips are we able evenly to replace.

AsadYea indeed, We are able to make whole his very finger-tips!



al-Qiyamah 075:005

75:5 بل يريد الانسان ليفجر امامه


TransliterationBal yureedu al-insanu liyafjura amamahu
LiteralRather the human/mankind wants to debauch/corrupt in front of him.

Yusuf AliBut man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.
PickthalBut man would fain deny what is before him.
Arberry Nay, but man desires to continue on as a libertine,
ShakirNay! man desires to give the lie to what is before him.
SarwarIn fact, people want to have eternal life in this world.
KhalifaBut the human being tends to believe only what he sees in front of him.
Hilali/KhanNay! (Man denies Resurrection and Reckoning. So) he desires to continue committing sins.
H/K/SaheehBut man desires to continue in sin.
MalikBut man wishes to keep on doing evil in the future as well.[5]
QXPBut man is after subverting his own future.
Maulana AliNay, man desires to go on doing evil in front of him.
Free MindsNo, man desires that he continue committing sins.
Qaribullah Rather, the human desires to continue in his immorality,

George SaleBut man chooseth to be wicked, for the time which is before him.
JM RodwellBut man chooseth to deny what is before him:

AsadNone the less man chooses to deny what lies ahead of him,



al-Qiyamah 075:006

75:6 يسأل ايان يوم القيامة


TransliterationYas-alu ayyana yawmu alqiyamati
LiteralHe asks/questions: "When (is) the Resurrection Day?"

Yusuf AliHe questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
PickthalHe asketh: When will be this Day of Resurrection?
Arberry asking, 'When shall be the Day of Resurrection?'
ShakirHe asks: When is the day of resurrection?
SarwarHe asks, "When will be the Day of Judgment?".
KhalifaHe doubts the Day of Resurrection!
Hilali/KhanHe asks: "When will be this Day of Resurrection?"
H/K/SaheehHe asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
MalikHe questions: "When will this Day of Resurrection be?"[6]
QXP(Yet) he asks, "When will this Day of Resurrection be?"
Maulana AliHe asks: When is the day of Resurrection?

Qaribullah 'When will the Day of Resurrection be? ' he asks,

al-Qiyamah 075:007

75:7 فاذا برق البصر


TransliterationFa-itha bariqa albasaru
LiteralSo if/when the eye sight/vision glared/gleamed/confused and astonished .

Yusuf AliAt length, when the sight is dazed,
PickthalBut when sight is confounded
Arberry But when the sight is dazed
ShakirSo when the sight becomes dazed,
SarwarWhen the eye is bewildered,
KhalifaOnce the vision is sharpened.
Hilali/KhanSo, when the sight shall be dazed,
H/K/SaheehSo when vision is dazzled
MalikWell, it will come when the sight shall be dazed,[7]
QXPBut when the sight is dazzled.
Maulana AliSo when the sight is confused,
Free MindsSo, when the sight is dazzled.
Qaribullah but when the sight is dazed

JM RodwellBut when the eye shall be dazzled,

AsadBut [on that Day,] when the eyesight is by fear confounded,



al-Qiyamah 075:008

75:8 وخسف القمر


TransliterationWakhasafa alqamaru
LiteralAnd the moon punctured/eclipsed .

Yusuf AliAnd the moon is buried in darkness.
PickthalAnd the moon is eclipsed
Arberry and the moon is eclipsed,
ShakirAnd the moon becomes dark,
Sarwarthe moon eclipsed.
KhalifaAnd the moon is eclipsed.
Hilali/KhanAnd the moon will be eclipsed,
H/K/SaheehAnd the moon darkens
Malikthe moon will be eclipsed,[8]
QXPAnd the moon is darkened. (The banner of the Age of Ignorance bearing the moon logo goes down).
Maulana AliAnd the moon becomes dark,
Free MindsAnd the moon is eclipsed.
Qaribullah and the moon eclipsed,

George Saleand the moon shall be eclipsed,
JM RodwellAnd when the moon shall be darkened,

Asadand the moon is darkened,



al-Qiyamah 075:009

75:9 وجمع الشمس والقمر


TransliterationWajumiAAa alshshamsu waalqamaru
LiteralAnd the sun and the moon were gathered/collected.

Yusuf AliAnd the sun and moon are joined together,-
PickthalAnd sun and moon are united,
Arberry and the sun and moon are brought together,
ShakirAnd the sun and the moon are brought together,
Sarwarand the sun and the moon are brought together,
KhalifaAnd the sun and the moon crash into one another.
Hilali/KhanAnd the sun and moon will be joined together (by going one into the other or folded up or deprived of their light, etc.)
H/K/SaheehAnd the sun and the moon are joined,
Malikand the sun and the moon will be brought together[9]
QXPAnd the sun and the moon are brought together. (Persia and Arabia come under one Rule. Sun being the logo on the Persian banner).
Maulana AliAnd the sun and the moon are brought together --

Qaribullah when the sun and moon are gathered together

George Saleand the sun and the moon shall be in conjunction;

al-Qiyamah 075:010

75:10 يقول الانسان يومئذ اين المفر


TransliterationYaqoolu al-insanu yawma-ithin ayna almafarru
LiteralThe human/mankind that day says: "Where (is) the escape/escape to (shelter)?"

Yusuf AliThat Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"
PickthalOn that day man will cry: Whither to flee!
Arberry upon that day man shall say, 'Whither to flee?'
ShakirMan shall say on that day: Whither to fly to?
Sarwarpeople will say, "Is there anywhere to run away?".
KhalifaThe human being will say on that day, "Where is the escape?"
Hilali/KhanOn that Day man will say: "Where (is the refuge) to flee?"
H/K/SaheehMan will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"
Malik- on that Day man will ask: "Is there any way to escape?"[10]
QXPOn that Day man will wonder, "Where to flee!" (In this life and in the life to come. Verses 7-10 could easily allude to the merging of the super power of the times, Persia with the newly enlightened Arabia in 642 C.E., 10 years after the exalted Prophet's death).
Maulana AliMan will say on that day: Whither to flee?
Free MindsMan will say on that Day: "Where can I escape!"
Qaribullah on that Day the human will ask: 'To (which place) shall I flee? '

George Saleon that day man shall say, where is a place of refuge?
JM RodwellOn that day man shall cry, "Where is there a place to flee to?"

Asadon that Day will man exclaim "Whither to flee?"



al-Qiyamah 075:011

75:11 كلا لاوزر


TransliterationKalla la wazara
LiteralNo but (there is) no shelter .

Yusuf AliBy no means! No place of safety!
PickthalAlas! No refuge!
Arberry No indeed; not a refuge!
ShakirBy no means! there shall be no place of refuge!
SarwarCertainly not! There will be no place of refuge.
KhalifaAbsolutely, there is no escape.
Hilali/KhanNo! There is no refuge!
H/K/SaheehNo! There is no refuge.
MalikNay! There will be no refuge.[11]
QXPBut, nay! No height to mount above the turmoil!
Maulana AliNo! There is no refuge!
Free MindsNo. There is no refuge.
Qaribullah No, there shall be no (place of) refuge.

George SaleBy no means: There shall be no place to fly unto.
JM RodwellBut in vain-there is no refuge-

AsadBut nay: no refuge [for thee, O man]!



al-Qiyamah 075:012

75:12 الى ربك يومئذ المستقر


TransliterationIla rabbika yawma-ithin almustaqarru
LiteralTo your Lord that day (is) the settlement .

Yusuf AliBefore thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.
PickthalUnto thy Lord is the recourse that day.
Arberry Upon that day the recourse shall be to thy Lord.
ShakirWith your Lord alone shall on that day be the place of rest.
SarwarThe only place of refuge will be with God.
KhalifaTo your Lord, on that day, is the final destiny.
Hilali/KhanUnto your Lord (Alone) will be the place of rest that Day.
H/K/SaheehTo your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.
MalikOn that Day, the refuge will only be towards your Lord.[12]
QXPUnto your Lord that Day is the resting place.
Maulana AliWith thy Lord on that day is the place of rest.
Free MindsTo your Lord on that Day is the abode.
Qaribullah For on that Day the refuge shall be to your Lord.

George SaleWith thy Lord shall be the sure mansion of rest on that day:
JM RodwellWith thy Lord on that day shall be the sole asylum.

AsadWith thy Sustainer, on that Day, the journey's end will be!



al-Qiyamah 075:013

75:13 ينبأ الانسان يومئذ بما قدم واخر


TransliterationYunabbao al-insanu yawma-ithin bima qaddama waakhkhara
LiteralThe human/mankind (will) be informed that day with what he advanced/preceded and he delayed.

Yusuf AliThat Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.
PickthalOn that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind.
Arberry Upon that day man shall be told his former deeds and his latter;
ShakirMan shall on that day be informed of what he sent before and (what he) put off.
SarwarOn that day, people will be informed of all that they had done and all that they were supposed to do.
KhalifaThe human being will be informed, on that day, of everything he did to advance himself, and everything he did to regress himself.
Hilali/KhanOn that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward (of his evil or good deeds), and what he left behind (of his good or evil traditions).
H/K/SaheehMan will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.
MalikOn that Day man shall be told about all his deeds, from the first to the last.[13]
QXPOn the Day when man is apprised of all his acts of commission and omission. (All he has done and left undone. All deeds that advanced him and kept him behind).
Maulana AliMan will that day be informed of what he sent before and what he put off.
Free MindsMan will be told on that Day what he has put forward, and what he has done.
Qaribullah On that Day the human shall be informed of his former and latter deeds.

George SaleOn that day shall a man be told that which he hath done first and last.
JM RodwellOn that day shall man be told of all that he hath done first and last;

AsadMan will be apprised, on that Day, of what he has done and what he has left undone:



al-Qiyamah 075:014

75:14 بل الانسان على نفسه بصيرة


TransliterationBali al-insanu AAala nafsihi baseeratun
LiteralRather the human/mankind (is) on him self (an) evidence/witness .

Yusuf AliNay, man will be evidence against himself,
PickthalOh, but man is a telling witness against himself,
Arberry nay, man shall be a clear proof against himself,
ShakirNay! man is evidence against himself,
SarwarIn fact, people are well-aware of their own soul
KhalifaThe human being will be his own judge.
Hilali/KhanNay! Man will be a witness against himself (as his body parts (skin, hands, legs, etc.) will speak about his deeds).
H/K/SaheehRather, man, against himself, will be a witness,
MalikIndeed, man shall bear witness against himself,[14]
QXPOh, but man is a telling witness against himself.
Maulana AliNay, man is evidence against himself,
Free MindsNo, man will testify against himself.
Qaribullah He shall be a clear proof against himself,

George SaleYea; a man shall be an evidence against himself:
JM RodwellYea, a man shall be the eye witness against himself:

Asadnay, but man shall against himself be an eye-witness,



al-Qiyamah 075:015

75:15 ولو القى معاذيره


TransliterationWalaw alqa maAAatheerahu
LiteralAnd even if he threw (gave) his apologies/excuses.

Yusuf AliEven though he were to put up his excuses.
PickthalAlthough he tender his excuses.
Arberry even though he offer his excuses.
ShakirThough he puts forth his excuses.
Sarwareven though they make excuses.
KhalifaNo excuses will be accepted.
Hilali/KhanThough he may put forth his excuses (to cover his evil deeds).
H/K/SaheehEven if he presents his excuses.
Malikeven though he shall plead with excuses.[15]
QXPEven though he were to put forward all his excuses.
Maulana AliThough he put up excuses.

Qaribullah even though he offers his excuses.

George SaleAnd though he offer his excuses, they shall not be received.

al-Qiyamah 075:016

75:16 لاتحرك به لسانك لتعجل به


TransliterationLa tuharrik bihi lisanaka litaAAjala bihi
LiteralDo not move with it your tongue to hurry/hasten/rush with it.

Yusuf AliMove not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.
PickthalStir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it.
Arberry Move not thy tongue with it to hasten it;
ShakirDo not move your tongue with it to make haste with it,
Sarwar(Muhammad), do not move your tongue too quickly to recite the Quran.
KhalifaDo not move your tongue to hasten it.
Hilali/KhanMove not your tongue concerning (the Quran, O Muhammad SAW) to make haste therewith.
H/K/SaheehMove not your tongue with it, [O Muúammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qurâ an.
MalikO Prophet, do not move your tongue too fast to memorize this revelation,[16]
QXP(Now whenever you read the verses of the Qur'an) read not in haste stirring your tongue. (20:114).
Maulana AliMove not thy tongue therewith to make haste with it.

Qaribullah Do not move your tongue with it (the Revelation) to hasten it.

George SaleMove not thy tongue, O Mohammed, in repeating the revelations brought thee by Gabriel, before he shall have finished the same, that thou mayest quickly commit them to memory:

al-Qiyamah 075:017

75:17 ان علينا جمعه وقرانه


TransliterationInna AAalayna jamAAahu waqur-anahu
LiteralThat truly on Us (is) gathering/accumulating it , and its reading/recitation .

Yusuf AliIt is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it:
PickthalLo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof.
Arberry Ours it is to gather it, and to recite it.
ShakirSurely on Us (devolves) the collecting of it and the reciting of it.
SarwarWe shall be responsible for its collection and its recitation.
KhalifaIt is we who will collect it into Quran.
Hilali/KhanIt is for Us to collect it and to give you (O Muhammad SAW) the ability to recite it (the Quran),
H/K/SaheehIndeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.
MalikIt is Our responsibility to collect it in your memory, and make you recite it[17]
QXPBehold, it is up to Us to gather it (in your heart) and the reading of it. (He will bless whatever effort we put into learning it).
Maulana AliSurely on Us rests the collecting of it and the reciting of it.
Free MindsIt is for Us to gather it and relate it.
Qaribullah It's gathering and reciting is upon Us.

George SaleFor the collecting the Koran in thy mind, and the teaching thee the true reading thereof are incumbent on Us.
JM RodwellFor we will see to the collecting and the recital of it;

Asadfor, behold, it is for Us to gather it [in thy heart,] and to cause it to be read [as it ought to be read].



al-Qiyamah 075:018

75:18 فاذا قراناه فاتبع قرانه


TransliterationFa-itha qara/nahu faittabiAA qur-anahu
LiteralSo when/if We read it, so follow its reading/recitation .

Yusuf AliBut when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated):
PickthalAnd when We read it, follow thou the reading;
Arberry So, when We recite it, follow thou its recitation.
ShakirTherefore when We have recited it, follow its recitation.
SarwarWhen We recite it, follow its recitation (by Us).
KhalifaOnce we recite it, you shall follow such a Quran.
Hilali/KhanAnd when We have recited it to you (O Muhammad SAW through Jibrael (Gabriel)), then follow you its (the Qurans) recital.
H/K/SaheehSo when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.
Malikand when it is recited, to make you follow it,[18]
QXPThus, when We read it, follow you the reading. (Allah has revealed the Qur'an, and bestowed upon us the faculty of understanding, hence, "When We read it.")
Maulana AliSo when We recite it, follow its recitation.
Free MindsSo when We relate it, you shall follow its revelation.
Qaribullah When We recite it, follow its recitation.

George SaleBut when We shall have read the same unto thee by the tongue of the angel, do thou follow the reading thereof:
JM RodwellBut when we have recited it, then follow thou the recital,

AsadThus, when We recite it, follow thou its wording [with all thy mind]:



al-Qiyamah 075:019

75:19 ثم ان علينا بيانه


TransliterationThumma inna AAalayna bayanahu
LiteralThen that truly on Us (is) its clarification/explanation.

Yusuf AliNay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear):
PickthalThen lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof.
Arberry Then Ours it is to explain it.
ShakirAgain on Us (devolves) the explaining of it.
SarwarWe shall be responsible for its explanation.
KhalifaThen it is we who will explain it.
Hilali/KhanThen it is for Us (Allah) to make it clear to you,
H/K/SaheehThen upon Us is its clarification [to you].
Malikand then it is Our responsibility to explain it.[19]
QXPThen, behold! It is for Us to explain it. (The Qur'an is its own best commentary. It explains itself).
Maulana AliAgain on Us rests the explaining of it.
Free MindsThen it is for Us to clarify it.
Qaribullah It's explanation is upon Us.

George SaleAnd afterwards it shall be our part to explain it unto thee.
JM RodwellAnd, verily, afterwards it shall be ours to make it clear to thee.)

Asadand then, behold, it will be for Us to make its meaning clear.



al-Qiyamah 075:020

75:20 كلا بل تحبون العاجلة


TransliterationKalla bal tuhibboona alAAajilata
LiteralNo, but you love/like the worldly life/present.

Yusuf AliNay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,
PickthalNay, but ye do love the fleeting Now
Arberry No indeed; but you love the hasty world,
ShakirNay! But you love the present life,
SarwarHuman beings certainly do not want to pay much attention to the Quran. In fact, they love the worldly life
KhalifaIndeed, you love this fleeting life.
Hilali/KhanNot (as you think, that you (mankind) will not be resurrected and recompensed for your deeds), but (you men) love the present life of this world,
H/K/SaheehNo! But you love the immediate
MalikNay, the fact is that you people love this fleeting life[20]
QXPNay, but you love instant results.
Maulana AliNay, but you love the present life,
Free MindsAlas, you all like this world.
Qaribullah Yet you love this hasty world

George SaleBy no means shalt thou be thus hasty for the future. But ye love that which hasteneth away,
JM RodwellAye, but ye love the transitory,

AsadNAY, but [most of] you love this fleeting life,



al-Qiyamah 075:021

75:21 وتذرون الاخرة


TransliterationWatatharoona al-akhirata
LiteralAnd you leave the end (other life).

Yusuf AliAnd leave alone the Hereafter.
PickthalAnd neglect the Hereafter.
Arberry and leave be the Hereafter.
ShakirAnd neglect the hereafter.
Sarwarand neglect the life to come.
KhalifaWhile disregarding the Hereafter.
Hilali/KhanAnd leave (neglect) the Hereafter.
H/K/SaheehAnd leave the Hereafter.
Malikand are heedless to the Hereafter.[21]

al-Qiyamah 075:022

75:22 وجوه يومئذ ناضرة


TransliterationWujoohun yawma-ithin nadiratun
LiteralFaces/fronts, that day (are) beautiful and good (bright/blooming).

Yusuf AliSome faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-
PickthalThat day will faces be resplendent,
Arberry Upon that day faces shall be radiant,
Shakir(Some) faces on that day shall be bright,
SarwarOn the Day of Judgment some faces will be bright,
KhalifaSome faces, on that day, will be happy
Hilali/KhanSome faces that Day shall be Nadirah (shining and radiant).
H/K/Saheeh[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

75:24 ووجوه يومئذ باسرة

LiteralAnd faces/fronts, that day (are) frowning/gloomy .

Yusuf AliAnd some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,
PickthalAnd that day will other faces be despondent,
Arberry and upon that day faces shall be scowling,
ShakirAnd (other) faces on that day shall be gloomy,
SarwarOthers will be despondent,
KhalifaOther faces will be, on that day, miserable.
Hilali/KhanAnd some faces, that Day, will be Basirah (dark, gloomy, frowning, and sad),
H/K/SaheehAnd [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
MalikAnd on that Day some faces shall be gloomy,[24]
QXPAnd some faces on that Day will be despondent.
Maulana AliAnd (other) faces that day will be gloomy,
Free MindsAnd faces on that Day will be gloomy.
Qaribullah And on that Day there shall be scowling faces,

George Saleand some countenances, on that day, shall be dismal:
JM RodwellAnd faces on that day shall be dismal,

Asadand some faces will on that Day be overcast with despair,



al-Qiyamah 075:025

75:25 تظن ان يفعل بها فاقرة


TransliterationTathunnu an yufAAala biha faqiratun
Literal(They) think/suppose that a disaster/calamity will be made/done with it.

Yusuf AliIn the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;
PickthalThou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them.
Arberry thou mightest think the Calamity has been wreaked on them.
ShakirKnowing that there will be made to befall them some great calamity.
Sarwarcertain of facing a great calamity.
KhalifaExpecting the worst.
Hilali/KhanThinking that some calamity was about to fall on them;
H/K/SaheehExpecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
Malikthinking that some backbreaking calamity is about to be inflicted on them.[25]
QXPExpecting a back breaking calamity.
Maulana AliKnowing that a great disaster will be made to befall them.
Free MindsThinking that a punishment is coming to them.
Qaribullah so they might think the Calamity had been inflicted upon them.

George SaleThey shall think that a crushing calamity shall be brought upon them.
JM RodwellAs if they thought that some great calamity would befal them.

Asadknowing that a crushing calamity is about to befall them.



al-Qiyamah 075:026

75:26 كلا اذا بلغت التراقي


TransliterationKalla itha balaghati alttaraqiya
LiteralNo, but when/if the collar bones/verge of death reached.

Yusuf AliYea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),
PickthalNay, but when the life cometh up to the throat
Arberry No indeed; when it reaches the clavicles
ShakirNay! When it comes up to the throat,
SarwarSome people, certainly, do not believe in it, but when a person's soul reaches up to his throat
KhalifaIndeed, when (the soul) reaches the throat.
Hilali/KhanNay, when (the soul) reaches to the collar bone (i.e. up to the throat in its exit),
H/K/SaheehNo! When the soul has reached the collar bones
MalikNay, when a man’s soul is about to leave and reaches to the throat,[26]
QXPNay, when the last breaths come up to the throat.
Maulana AliNay, when it comes up to the throat,
Free MindsAlas, when it reaches the throat.
Qaribullah But, when (the soul) reaches the collar bone

George SaleAssuredly. When a man's soul shall come up to his throat, in his last agony;
JM RodwellAye, when the soul shall come up into the throat,

AsadNAY, but when [the last breath] comes up to the throat [of a dying man],



al-Qiyamah 075:027

75:27 وقيل من راق


TransliterationWaqeela man raqin
LiteralAnd (it) was said: "Who (is) ascended/elevated (being saved)?"

Yusuf AliAnd there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"
PickthalAnd men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now)?
Arberry and it is said, 'Who is an enchanter?'
ShakirAnd it is said: Who will be a magician?
Sarwarand the angels say, "Who will take away his soul,
KhalifaAnd it is ordered: "Let go!"
Hilali/KhanAnd it will be said: "Who can cure him and save him from death?"
H/K/SaheehAnd it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
Malikand those around him cry: "Is there any enchanter to help?"[27]
QXPAnd those around cry, "Is there any charmer?"
Maulana AliAnd it is said: Who will ascend (with it)?
Free MindsAnd it will be said: "Who can save him?"
Qaribullah and it is said: 'Who is a healing chanter? '

George Saleand the standers-by shall say, who bringeth a charm to recover him?
JM RodwellAnd there shall be a cry, "Who hath a charm that can restore him?"

Asadand people ask, "Is there any wizard [that could save him]?"



al-Qiyamah 075:028

75:28 وظن انه الفراق


TransliterationWathanna annahu alfiraqu
LiteralAnd (he) thought/assumed that it is the separation.

Yusuf AliAnd he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;
PickthalAnd he knoweth that it is the parting;
Arberry and he thinks that it is the parting
ShakirAnd he is sure that it is the (hour of) parting
Sarwar(the angels of mercy or the angels of wrath,)" then, he will realize that it is time to leave this world.
KhalifaHe knows it is the end.
Hilali/KhanAnd he (the dying person) will conclude that it was (the time) of departing (death);
H/K/SaheehAnd the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation
MalikThen man will conclude that it was the time of departure from this world.[28]
QXPBut he knows that this is the parting.
Maulana AliAnd he is sure that it is the parting,
Free MindsAnd he assumes it is the time of passing.
Qaribullah and when he thinks it is the time of departure

George SaleAnd shall think it to be his departure out of this world;
JM RodwellAnd the man feeleth that the time of his departure is come,

Asadthe while he [himself] knows that this is the parting,



al-Qiyamah 075:029

75:29 والتفت الساق بالساق


TransliterationWailtaffati alssaqu bialssaqi
LiteralAnd the shin/leg coiled/wrapped with the shin/leg.

Yusuf AliAnd one leg will be joined with another:
PickthalAnd agony is heaped on agony;
Arberry and leg is intertwined with leg,
ShakirAnd affliction is combined with affliction;
SarwarWhen legs are twisted around each other,
KhalifaEach leg will lay motionless next to the other leg.
Hilali/KhanAnd leg will be joined with another leg (shrouded)
H/K/SaheehAnd the leg is wound about the leg,
Malikwhile one leg will twist around the other leg (agony will heap on agony);[29]
QXPAnd it is pang upon pang.
Maulana AliAnd affliction is combined with affliction --
Free MindsAnd the leg is buckled around the other leg.
Qaribullah and when leg is intertwined with leg,

George Saleand one leg shall be joined with the other leg:
JM RodwellAnd when one leg shall be laid over the other,

Asadand is enwrapped in the pangs of death 11 - :



al-Qiyamah 075:030

75:30 الى ربك يومئذ المساق


TransliterationIla rabbika yawma-ithin almasaqu
LiteralTo your Lord (on) that day (is) the drive (destination).

Yusuf AliThat Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!
PickthalUnto thy Lord that day will be the driving.
Arberry upon that day unto thy Lord shall be the driving.
ShakirTo your Lord on that day shall be the driving.
Sarwarthat will be the time to be driven to one's Lord.
KhalifaTo your Lord, on that day, is the summoning.
Hilali/KhanThe drive will be, on that Day, to your Lord (Allah)!
H/K/SaheehTo your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.
Malikthat will be the Day of driving towards your Lord.[30]
QXPThat day the drive is to your Lord.
Maulana AliTo thy Lord on that day is the driving.
Free MindsTo your Lord on that Day he will be driven.
Qaribullah upon that Day the driving shall be to your Lord.

George SaleOn that day unto thy Lord shall he be driven.
JM RodwellTo thy Lord on that day shall he be driven on;

Asadat that time towards thy Sustainer does he feel impelled to turn!



al-Qiyamah 075:031

75:31 فلا صدق ولاصلى


TransliterationFala saddaqa wala salla
LiteralSo he did not give charity and nor he prayed.

Yusuf AliSo he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!-
PickthalFor he neither trusted, nor prayed.
Arberry For he confirmed it not, and did not pray,
ShakirSo he did not accept the truth, nor did he pray,
SarwarThe human being does not want to believe the Truth, nor does he want to pray.
KhalifaFor he observed neither the charity, nor the contact prayers (Salat).
Hilali/KhanSo he (the disbeliever) neither believed (in this Quran, in the Message of Muhammad SAW) nor prayed!
H/K/SaheehAnd the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed.
MalikBut in this life he neither believed, nor offered Salah (prayed);[31]
QXPFor he neither stood by the Truth, nor did he follow it. ('Sal'= To follow, like the runners-up horse closely follows the winner = To closely follow the Commands of Allah).
Maulana AliSo he accepted not the truth nor prayed,
Free MindsFor he did not believe nor reach out.
Qaribullah Because, he neither believed nor prayed;

George SaleFor he believed not, neither did he pray;
JM RodwellFor he believed not, and he did not pray,

Asad[Useless, though, will be his repentance: 13] for [as long as he was alive] he did not accept the truth, nor did he pray [for enlightenment],



al-Qiyamah 075:032

75:32 ولكن كذب وتولى


TransliterationWalakin kaththaba watawalla
LiteralAnd but lied/denied and turned away.

Yusuf AliBut on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!
PickthalBut he denied and flouted.
Arberry but he cried it lies, and he turned away,
ShakirBut called the truth a lie and turned back,
SarwarHe rejects the faith, turns away
KhalifaBut he disbelieved and turned away.
Hilali/KhanBut on the contrary, he belied (this Quran and the Message of Muhammad SAW) and turned away!
H/K/SaheehBut [instead], he denied and turned away.
Malikbut on the contrary he denied the truth and turned away.[32]
QXPRather, he used to deny and turn away.
Maulana AliBut denied and turned back,
Free MindsBut he denied and turned away.
Qaribullah he belied the truth and turned away;

George Salebut he accused God's Apostle of imposture, and turned back from obeying him:
JM RodwellBut he called the truth a lie and turned his back,

Asadbut, on the contrary, he gave the lie to the truth and turned away [from it],



al-Qiyamah 075:033

75:33 ثم ذهب الى اهله يتمطى


TransliterationThumma thahaba ila ahlihi yatamatta
LiteralThen he went to his people walking stretched with his arms moving in a conceited manner (marching arrogantly).

Yusuf AliThen did he stalk to his family in full conceit!
PickthalThen went he to his folk with glee.
Arberry then he went to his household arrogantly.
ShakirThen he went to his followers, walking away in haughtiness.
Sarwarand haughtily goes to his people.
KhalifaWith his family, he acted arrogantly.
Hilali/KhanThen he walked in full pride to his family admiring himself!
H/K/SaheehAnd then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].
MalikThen he went to his kinfolk elated with pride.[33]
QXPAnd then used to walk back to his folk and his ways gleefully.
Maulana AliThen he went to his people in haughtiness.
Free MindsThen he went to his family admiring himself.
Qaribullah then went arrogantly to his household.

George SaleThen he departed unto his family, walking with a haughty mien.
JM RodwellThen, walking with haughty men, rejoined his people.

Asadand then went arrogantly back to what he had come from.



al-Qiyamah 075:034

75:34 اولى لك فاولى


TransliterationAwla laka faawla
LiteralWoe/warning/threat (Hell) for you, so woe/warning/threat (Hell for you).

Yusuf AliWoe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
PickthalNearer unto thee and nearer,
Arberry Nearer to thee and nearer
ShakirNearer to you (is destruction) and nearer,
SarwarWoe to you! Woe to you!
KhalifaYou have deserved this.
Hilali/KhanWoe to you (O man (disbeliever))! And then (again) woe to you!
H/K/SaheehWoe to you, and woe!
MalikWoe to you, O man! Woe to you.[34]
QXPThis is the most befitting for you - now this is the most befitting.
Maulana AliNearer to thee and nearer,
Free MindsWoe to you and woe to you.
Qaribullah Near to you and nearer,

George SaleWherefore, wo be unto thee; wo!
JM RodwellThat Hour is nearer to thee and nearer,

Asad[And yet, O man, thine end comes hourly] nearer unto thee, and nearer -



al-Qiyamah 075:035

75:35 ثم اولى لك فاولى


TransliterationThumma awla laka faawla
LiteralThen woe/warning/threat (Hell) for you, so woe/warning/threat (Hell for you).

Yusuf AliAgain, Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
PickthalAgain nearer unto thee and nearer (is the doom).
Arberry then nearer to thee and nearer!
ShakirAgain (consider how) nearer to you and nearer.
SarwarFor you, the human being of such behavior, will certainly deserve it.
KhalifaIndeed, you have deserved this.
Hilali/KhanAgain, woe to you (O man (disbeliever))! And then (again) woe to you!
H/K/SaheehThen woe to you, and woe!
MalikAgain woe to you, O man! Woe to you.[35]
QXPAgain! This is the most befitting for you - now this is the most befitting. (The impending requital befits the behavior).
Maulana AliAgain, nearer to thee and nearer (is woe).

Qaribullah then nearer to you and nearer!

George SaleAnd again, wo be unto thee; wo!
JM RodwellIt is ever nearer to thee and nearer still.

Asadand ever nearer unto thee, and nearer!



al-Qiyamah 075:036

75:36 ايحسب الانسان ان يترك سدى


TransliterationAyahsabu al-insanu an yutraka sudan
LiteralDoes the human/mankind think/suppose that (E) he be left unattended to/disregarded (uncounted with)?

Yusuf AliDoes man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?
PickthalThinketh man that he is to be left aimless?
Arberry What, does man reckon he shall be left to roam at will?
ShakirDoes man think that he is to be left to wander without an aim?
SarwarDoes the human being think that he will be left uncontrolled?
KhalifaDoes the human being think that he will go to nothing?
Hilali/KhanDoes man think that he will be left Suda (neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him)?
H/K/SaheehDoes man think that he will be left neglected?
MalikDoes man think that he will be left without any purpose?[36]
QXPDoes man think he will be left alone like a soundless broken musical string?
Maulana AliDoes man think that he will be left aimless?
Free MindsDid man think that he will be left neglected?
Qaribullah Does the human think he will be left to roam at will?

George SaleDoth man think that he shall be left at full liberty, without control?
JM RodwellThinketh man that he shall be left supreme?

AsadDOES MAN, then, think that he is to be left to himself to go about at will?



al-Qiyamah 075:037

75:37 الم يك نطفة من مني يمنى


TransliterationAlam yaku nutfatan min manayyin yumna
LiteralDid he not be a drop/male's or female's secretion from sperm/semen , semen being ejaculated/ discharged ?

Yusuf AliWas he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)?
PickthalWas he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth?
Arberry Was he not a sperm-drop spilled?
ShakirWas he not a small seed in the seminal elements,
SarwarWas he not once just a drop of discharged sperm.
KhalifaWas he not a drop of ejected semen?
Hilali/KhanWas he not a Nutfah (mixed male and female discharge of semen) poured forth?
H/K/SaheehHad he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
MalikWas he not once a drop of emitted semen?[37]
QXPWas he not gametes that moved to join?
Maulana AliWas he not a small life-germ in sperm emitted?
Free MindsWas he not a seed from sperm put forth?
Qaribullah What, was he not an ejaculated drop (of sperm)?

George SaleWas he not a drop of seed, which was emitted?
JM RodwellWas he not a mere embryo?

AsadWas he not once a [mere] drop of sperm that had been spilt,



al-Qiyamah 075:038

75:38 ثم كان علقة فخلق فسوى


TransliterationThumma kana AAalaqatan fakhalaqa fasawwa
LiteralThen (he) was/became a blood clot , so He created (it), so He straightened/perfected (it).

Yusuf AliThen did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.
PickthalThen he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned
Arberry Then he was a blood-clot, and He created and formed,
ShakirThen he was a clot of blood, so He created (him) then made (him) perfect.
SarwarWas he not turned into a clot of blood? God then formed him and gave him proper shape.
KhalifaThen He created an embryo out of it!
Hilali/KhanThen he became an Alaqa (a clot); then (Allah) shaped and fashioned (him) in due proportion.
H/K/SaheehThen he was a clinging clot, and [Allah] created [his form] and proportioned [him]
MalikThen he became a leechlike mass, then Allah created him and fashioned him in due proportion,[38]
QXPThen he became a zygote. And He shaped and fashioned him in due proportion.
Maulana AliThen he was a clot; so He created (him), then made (him) perfect.
Free MindsThen he was a clot, so he was created and developed.
Qaribullah Then he was a clot of blood, then He created and formed him

George SaleAfterwards he became a little coagulated blood; and God formed him, and fashioned him with just proportion:
JM RodwellThen he became thick blood of which God formed him and fashioned him;

Asadand thereafter became a germ-cell - whereupon He created and formed [it] in accordance with what [it] was meant to be,



al-Qiyamah 075:039

75:39 فجعل منه الزوجين الذكر والانثى


TransliterationFajaAAala minhu alzzawjayni alththakara waal-ontha
LiteralSo He made/created from it the couples/pairs , the male and the female.

Yusuf AliAnd of him He made two sexes, male and female.
PickthalAnd made of him a pair, the male and female.
Arberry and He made of him two kinds, male and female.
ShakirThen He made of him two kinds, the male and the female.
SarwarFrom the human being, God made males and females in pairs.
KhalifaHe made it into male or female!
Hilali/KhanAnd made him in two sexes, male and female.
H/K/SaheehAnd made of him two mates, the male and the female.
Malikand made him either of the two sexes, male and female.[39]
QXPAnd He has made of humans pairs, male and female.
Maulana AliThen He made of him two kinds, the male and the female.

75:40 اليس ذلك بقادر على ان يحيي الموتى


TransliterationAlaysa thalika biqadirin AAala an yuhyiya almawta
LiteralIs not that with capable/able on that He revives/makes alive the deads?448

Yusuf AliHas not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead?
PickthalIs not He (Who doeth so) Able to bring the dead to life?
Arberry What, is He not able to quicken the dead?
ShakirIs not He able to give life to the dead?
SarwarDoes He then not have the power to bring the dead back to life?.
KhalifaIs He then unable to revive the dead?
Hilali/KhanIs not He (Allah Who does that), Able to give life to the dead? (Yes! He is Able to do all things).
H/K/SaheehIs not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
MalikHas He not then the power to bring the dead to life?[40]
QXPIs not He, then, Able to bring the dead to life?
Maulana AliIs not He powerful to give life to the dead?
Free MindsIs One as such then not able to resurrect the dead?
Qaribullah What, is He then unable to revive the dead?

George SaleIs not he who hath done this able to quicken the dead?
JM RodwellIs not He powerful enough to quicken the dead?

AsadIs not He, then; able to bring the dead back to life?
