96:1 سورة العلق بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ اقرا باسم ربك الذي خلق


TransliterationIqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaqa
LiteralRead by your Lord's name who created.

Yusuf AliProclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
PickthalRead: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,
Arberry Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created,
ShakirRead in the name of your Lord Who created.
Sarwar(Muhammad), read in the name of your Lord who created (all things).
KhalifaRead, in the name of your Lord, who created.
Hilali/KhanRead! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),
H/K/SaheehRecite in the name of your Lord who created
MalikRecite! (or read!) In the name of your Lord Who created[1]

al-`Alaq 096:002

96:2 خلق الانسان من علق


TransliterationKhalaqa al-insana min AAalaqin
LiteralHe created the human/mankind from blood clots/sperm .

Yusuf AliCreated man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
PickthalCreateth man from a clot.
Arberry created Man of a blood-clot.
ShakirHe created man from a clot.
SarwarHe created man from a clot of blood.
KhalifaHe created man from an embryo.
Hilali/KhanHas created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).
H/K/SaheehCreated man from a clinging substance.
Malik- created man from clots of blood. [2]
QXPCreated man from a zygote.
Maulana AliCreates man from a clot,

al-`Alaq 096:003

96:3 اقرا وربك الاكرم


TransliterationIqra/ warabbuka al-akramu
LiteralRead and/by your Lord, the most honoured/generous .

Yusuf AliProclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
PickthalRead: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,
Arberry Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous,
ShakirRead and your Lord is Most Honorable,
SarwarRecite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One,
KhalifaRead, and your Lord, Most Exalted.
Hilali/KhanRead! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
H/K/SaheehRecite, and your Lord is the most Generous
MalikRecite! Your Lord is the Most Gracious,[3]
QXPRead! For, your Lord is the Most Generous. (He has placed a tremendous blessing in learning and teaching).
Maulana AliRead and thy Lord is most Generous,
Free MindsRead, and your Lord is the Generous One.
Qaribullah Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous,

George SaleRead, by thy most beneficent Lord;

al-`Alaq 096:004

96:4 الذي علم بالقلم


TransliterationAllathee AAallama bialqalami
LiteralWho taught/instructed by the pen/writing utensil.

Yusuf AliHe Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
PickthalWho teacheth by the pen,
Arberry who taught by the Pen,
ShakirWho taught (to write) with the pen
Sarwarwho, by the pen, taught the human being:.
KhalifaTeaches by means of the pen.
Hilali/KhanWho has taught (the writing) by the pen (the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch) ),
H/K/SaheehWho taught by the pen
MalikWho taught by the pen,[4]
QXPWho has taught the use of the pen.
Maulana AliWho taught by the pen,
Free MindsThe One who taught by the pen.
Qaribullah who taught by the pen,

al-`Alaq 096:005

96:5 علم الانسان مالم يعلم


TransliterationAAallama al-insana ma lam yaAAlam
LiteralHe taught/instructed the human/mankind what he did not know.

Yusuf AliTaught man that which he knew not.
PickthalTeacheth man that which he knew not.
Arberry taught Man that he knew not.
ShakirTaught man what he knew not.
SarwarHe taught the human being what he did not know.
KhalifaHe teaches man what he never knew.
Hilali/KhanHas taught man that which he knew not.
H/K/SaheehTaught man that which he knew not.
Maliktaught man what he knew not.[5]

al-`Alaq 096:006

96:6 كلا ان الانسان ليطغى


TransliterationKalla inna al-insana layatgha
LiteralNo but that truly the human/mankind tyrannizes/exceeds the limit (E).

Yusuf AliDay, but man doth transgress all bounds,
PickthalNay, but verily man is rebellious
Arberry No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent,
ShakirNay! man is most surely inordinate,
SarwarDespite this, the human being still tends to rebel
KhalifaIndeed, the human transgresses.
Hilali/KhanNay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.).
H/K/SaheehNo! [But] indeed, man transgresses
MalikNay! Indeed, man transgresses all bounds,[6]
QXPNay, verily, man tries to play God! ('Tagha' = Being a false god, 'Taghut' = Grossly overweening = Arrogance beyond limits = Creating rebellion = Trespassing Divine Values).
Maulana AliNay, man is surely inordinate,
Free MindsAlas, man is bound to transgress.
Qaribullah Indeed, surely the human is very insolent

George SaleAssuredly. Verily man becometh insolent,
JM RodwellNay, verily, Man is insolent,

AsadNay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening



al-`Alaq 096:007

96:7 ان راه استغنى


TransliterationAn raahu istaghna
LiteralThat (E) he saw/understood him(self), he enriched/sufficed (himself).

Yusuf AliIn that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.
PickthalThat he thinketh himself independent!
Arberry for he thinks himself self-sufficient.
ShakirBecause he sees himself free from want.
Sarwarbecause he thinks that he is independent.
KhalifaWhen he becomes rich.
Hilali/KhanBecause he considers himself self-sufficient.
H/K/SaheehBecause he sees himself self-sufficient.
Malikin thinking himself to be self-sufficient,[7]
QXP(And) in that he looks upon himself as self-sufficient. (Forgetting how indebted he is to the Creator and the society for all his mental and physical possessions).
Maulana AliBecause he looks upon himself as self-sufficient.
Free MindsWhen he achieves, he has no need.
Qaribullah that he sees himself sufficed.

George Salebecause he seeth himself abound in riches.
JM RodwellBecause he seeth himself possessed of riches.

Asadwhenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient:



al-`Alaq 096:008

96:8 ان الى ربك الرجعى


TransliterationInna ila rabbika alrrujAAa
LiteralThat truly to your Lord (is) the return.

Yusuf AliVerily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).
PickthalLo! unto thy Lord is the return.
Arberry Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning.
ShakirSurely to your Lord is the return.
SarwarHowever, (all things) will return to your Lord.
KhalifaTo your Lord is the ultimate destiny.
Hilali/KhanSurely! Unto your Lord is the return.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, to your Lord is the return.
Malikalthough surely towards your Lord is his return.[8]
QXPBehold, unto your Lord is the return. (Everything that exists goes back to the Creator as its Source and is bound by His Law. All people will be returned to Him for Judgment. Mankind will eventually return to the Divine System of life).
Maulana AliSurely to thy Lord is the return.
Free MindsTo your Lord is the return.
Qaribullah Indeed, to your Lord is the returning.

George SaleVerily unto thy Lord shall be the return of all.
JM RodwellVerily, to thy Lord is the return of all.

Asadfor, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return.



al-`Alaq 096:009

96:9 ارايت الذي ينهى


TransliterationAraayta allathee yanha
LiteralDid you see/understand who forbids/prevents?

Yusuf AliSeest thou one who forbids-
PickthalHast thou seen him who dissuadeth
Arberry What thinkest thou? He who forbids
ShakirHave you seen him who forbids
SarwarHave you seen the one who prohibits
KhalifaHave you seen the one who enjoins.
Hilali/KhanHave you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Aboo Jahl) who prevents,
H/K/SaheehHave you seen the one who forbids
MalikHave you seen the one (Abu Jahl) who forbids[9]
QXPHave you seen the kind of man who forbids -
Maulana AliHast thou seen him who forbids
Free MindsHave you seen the one who deters
Qaribullah What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids

al-`Alaq 096:010

96:10 عبدا اذا صلى


TransliterationAAabdan itha salla
LiteralA worshipper/servant/slave when/if he prayed ?

Yusuf AliA votary when he (turns) to pray?
PickthalA slave when he prayeth?
Arberry a servant when he prays --
ShakirA servant when he prays?
Sarwara servant of Ours from prayer?.
KhalifaOthers from praying?
Hilali/KhanA slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays?
H/K/SaheehA servant when he prays?
MalikOur servant from offering Salah (prayer)?[10]
QXPAnother servant when he follows the Divine Messages?
Maulana AliA servant when he prays?
Free MindsA servant from reaching out?
Qaribullah a worshiper when he prays.

George Salewho forbiddeth our servant, when he prayeth?

al-`Alaq 096:011

96:11 ارايت ان كان على الهدى


TransliterationAraayta in kana AAala alhuda
LiteralDid you see/understand if he was on the guidance?

Yusuf AliSeest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-
PickthalHast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
Arberry What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance
ShakirHave you considered if he were on the right way,
SarwarWhat will happen if the praying person is rightly guided
KhalifaIs it not better for him to follow the guidance?
Hilali/KhanTell me, if he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is on the guidance (of Allah)?
H/K/SaheehHave you seen if he is upon guidance
MalikHave you considered, if He was on the right guidance,[11]
QXPHave you seen that if such a person were on the right road,
Maulana AliSeest thou is he is on the right way,
Free MindsHave you seen if he was being guided,
Qaribullah Have you seen if he was upon guidance

al-`Alaq 096:012

96:12 او امر بالتقوى


TransliterationAw amara bialttaqwa
LiteralOr he ordered/commanded with the fear and obedience of God?

Yusuf AliOr enjoins Righteousness?
PickthalOr enjoineth piety?
Arberry or bade to godfearing --
ShakirOr enjoined guarding (against evil)?
Sarwaror if he commands others to maintain piety!?.
KhalifaOr advocate righteousness?
Hilali/KhanOr enjoins piety?
H/K/SaheehOr enjoins righteousness?
Malikor was enjoining true piety, why he would forbid someone from prayer?[12]
QXPOr his affairs were to lead him to Blissful security,

al-`Alaq 096:013

96:13 ارايت ان كذب وتولى


TransliterationAraayta in kaththaba watawalla
LiteralDid you see/understand if he lied/denied/falsified and he turned away?

Yusuf AliSeest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
PickthalHast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?
Arberry What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away -
ShakirHave you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back?
SarwarWhat will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!?.
KhalifaIf he disbelieves and turns away.
Hilali/KhanTell me if he (the disbeliever, Aboo Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away?
H/K/SaheehHave you seen if he denies and turns away
MalikHave you considered, if he denies the truth and turns away, what will happen?[13]
QXPMark out that he, then, would have known that, by thus practically denying the Truth, he is turning away from all that is good?
Maulana AliSeest thou if he denies and turns away?
Free MindsHave you seen if he lied and turned away?
Qaribullah What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away,

George SaleWhat thinkest thou; if he accuse the divine revelations of falsehood, and turn his back?
JM RodwellWhat thinkest thou? Hath he treated the truth as a lie and turned his back?

AsadHast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]?



al-`Alaq 096:014

96:14 الم يعلم بان الله يرى


TransliterationAlam yaAAlam bi-anna Allaha yara
LiteralDoes he not know with that (E) God sees/understands?

Yusuf AliKnoweth he not that Allah doth see?
PickthalIs he then unaware that Allah seeth?
Arberry Did he not know that God sees?
ShakirDoes he not know that Allah does see?
SarwarDoes he not realize that God sees him?.
KhalifaDoes he not realize that GOD sees?
Hilali/KhanKnows he not that Allah does see (what he does)?
H/K/SaheehDoes he not know that Allah sees?
MalikDoes he not know that Allah is observing all things?[14]
QXPDoes he not know that Allah sees to it that His Laws are enforced without exception?

al-`Alaq 096:015

96:15 كلا لئن لم ينته لنسفعا بالناصية


TransliterationKalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati
LiteralNo but if (E) he does not end/terminate/stop, We will pull and strike (E) by the forehead/forehead's hair.

Yusuf AliLet him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-
PickthalNay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
Arberry No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock,
ShakirNay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead,
SarwarLet him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks,
KhalifaIndeed, unless he refrains, we will take him by the forelock.
Hilali/KhanNay! If he (Aboo Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock,
H/K/SaheehNo! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock
MalikNay! Let him know that if he does not stop, We will drag him by the forelock,[15]
QXPNay, if such a person desists not, We (Our Law of Requital) will seize him by the forelock (to a state of humiliation (11:56)).
Maulana AliNay, if he desist not, We will seize him by the forelock --
Free MindsAlas, if he does not cease, We will strike the frontal lobe.
Qaribullah Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock,

George SaleAssuredly. Verily, if he forbear not, We will drag him by the forelock,
JM RodwellNay, verily, if he desist not, We shall seize him by the forelock,

AsadNay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 8 -



al-`Alaq 096:016

96:16 ناصية كاذبة خاطئة


TransliterationNasiyatin kathibatin khati-atin
LiteralA lying/denying/falsifying, sinning/erring/wronging forehead/forehead's hair.

Yusuf AliA lying, sinful forelock!
PickthalThe lying, sinful forelock -
Arberry a lying, sinful forelock.
ShakirA lying, sinful forehead.
Sarwarhis lying sinful forelock.
KhalifaA forelock that is disbelieving and sinful.
Hilali/KhanA lying, sinful forelock!
H/K/SaheehA lying, sinning forelock.
Malika lying, sinful forelock.[16]
QXPA forelock that is given to denial and committing fault upon fault.
Maulana AliA lying, sinful forelock!

al-`Alaq 096:017

96:17 فليدع ناديه


TransliterationFalyadAAu nadiyahu
LiteralSo he should call his caller.

Yusuf AliThen, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
PickthalThen let him call upon his henchmen!
Arberry So let him call on his concourse!
ShakirThen let him summon his council,
SarwarLet him call on his associates for help
KhalifaLet him then call on his helpers.
Hilali/KhanThen, let him call upon his council (of helpers),
H/K/SaheehThen let him call his associates;
MalikSo let him call his supporters for help,[17]
QXPLet him, then, call upon his advisory council.
Maulana AliThen let him summon his council,
Free MindsSo let him call on his supporter.
Qaribullah So, let him call upon his way!

George SaleAnd let him call his council to his assistance:
JM RodwellThen let him summon his associates;

Asadand then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom,



al-`Alaq 096:018

96:18 سندع الزبانية


TransliterationSanadAAu alzzabaniyata
LiteralWe will call the strong ones/patrol force/Elzabaneya angels.

Yusuf AliWe will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
PickthalWe will call the guards of hell.
Arberry We shall call on the guards of Hell.
ShakirWe too would summon the braves of the army.
Sarwarand We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell.
KhalifaWe will call the guardians of Hell.
Hilali/KhanWe will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)!
H/K/SaheehWe will call the angels of Hell.
MalikWe too shall call the guards of hell to deal with him.[18]
QXPWe shall summon the apprehending forces.
Maulana AliWe will summon the braves of the army.
Free MindsWe will call on the guardians.
Qaribullah We, will call the Zabania (the harsh angels of Hell).

George SaleWe also will call the infernal guards to cast him into hell.
JM RodwellWe too will summon the guards of Hell:

Asad[the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement!



al-`Alaq 096:019

96:19 كلا لاتطعه واسجد واقترب


TransliterationKalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib
LiteralNo but do not obey him, and prostrate and near/approach (to Me).

Yusuf AliDay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
PickthalNay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Arberry No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh.
ShakirNay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah).
Sarwar(Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God.
KhalifaYou shall not obey him; you shall fall prostrate and draw nearer.
Hilali/KhanNay! (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))! Do not obey him (Aboo Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah!
H/K/SaheehNo! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
MalikNay! Do not obey him! Prostrate yourself and bring yourself closer to your Lord.[19]
QXPNay, never be intimidated by a man like this! But submit completely in adoration to Divine Commands, and let every step of yours bring you nearer to your noble Goal.
Maulana AliNay! Obey him not, but prostrate thyself, and draw nigh (to Allah).
Free MindsAlas, do not obey him, prostrate and come near.
Qaribullah No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah).

George SaleAssuredly. Obey him not: But continue to adore God; and draw nigh unto Him.
JM RodwellNay! obey him not; but adore, and draw nigh to God.

AsadNay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]!
