43:31 وقالوا لولا نزل هذا القران على رجل من القريتين عظيم


TransliterationWaqaloo lawla nuzzila hatha alqur-anu AAala rajulin mina alqaryatayni AAatheemun
LiteralAnd they said: "If only this the Koran was descended on a great man from the two villages/urban cities."

Yusuf AliAlso, they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?"
PickthalAnd they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?
Arberry They say, 'Why was this Koran not sent down upon some man of moment in the two cities?'
ShakirAnd they say: Why was not this Quran revealed to a man of importance in the two towns?
SarwarThen they said, "Why this Quran had not been revealed to a man from either of the two great towns".
KhalifaThey said, "If only this Quran was sent down through another man from the two communities (Mecca or Yathrib) who is prominent!"

[I.e., Mecca and Taif - implying that if it were really a divine revelation it would have been bestowed on a person of "great standing", and not on Muhammad, who had neither wealth nor a position of eminence in his native city.]
