91:1 سورة الشمس بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والشمس وضحاها


TransliterationWaalshshamsi waduhaha
LiteralAnd/by the sun and its sunrise/day light .

Yusuf AliBy the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
PickthalBy the sun and his brightness,
Arberry By the sun and his morning brightness
ShakirI swear by the sun and its brilliance,
SarwarBy the sun and its noon-time brightness,
KhalifaBy the sun and its brightness.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the sun and its brightness;
H/K/SaheehBy the sun and its brightness
MalikBy the sun and its brightness;[1]
QXPWitness is the Sun and its radiant splendor.
Maulana AliBy the sun and his brightness!

91:2 والقمر اذا تلاها


TransliterationWaalqamari itha talaha
LiteralAnd/by the moon when/if it followed it.

Yusuf AliBy the Moon as she follows him;
PickthalAnd the moon when she followeth him,
Arberry and by the moon when she follows him,
ShakirAnd the moon when it follows the sun,
Sarwarby the moon when it follows the sun,
KhalifaThe moon that follows it.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the moon as it follows it (the sun);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the moon when it follows it
Malikby the moon, as she follows him;[2]
QXPAnd the Moon that borrows its light.
Maulana AliAnd the moon when she borrows light from him!
Free MindsAnd the Moon that comes after it.
Qaribullah by the moon, which follows it,

George Saleby the moon, when she followeth him;

91:3 والنهار اذا جلاها


TransliterationWaalnnahari itha jallaha
LiteralAnd/by the daytime when/if it shined/revealed it .

Yusuf AliBy the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory;
PickthalAnd the day when it revealeth him,
Arberry and by the day when it displays him
ShakirAnd the day when it shows it,
Sarwarby the day when it brightens the earth,
KhalifaThe day that reveals.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the day as it shows up (the suns) brightness;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the day when it displays it
Malikby the day, which shows its splendor;[3]
QXPWitness is the day as it brightens the world.
Maulana AliAnd the day when it exposes it to view!

91:4 والليل اذا يغشاها


TransliterationWaallayli itha yaghshaha
LiteralAnd/by the night when/if it covers/darkens it .

Yusuf AliBy the Night as it conceals it;
PickthalAnd the night when it enshroudeth him,
Arberry and by the night when it enshrouds him!
ShakirAnd the night when it draws a veil over it,
Sarwarby the night when it covers the earth with darkness,
KhalifaThe night that covers.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the night as it conceals it (the sun);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the night when it covers it
Malikby the night, which draws a veil over it;[4]
QXPAnd the night that cloaks it.
Maulana AliAnd the night when it draws a veil over it!

91:5 والسماء ومابناها


TransliterationWaalssama-i wama banaha
LiteralAnd/by the sky/space and who built/constructed it.

Yusuf AliBy the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
PickthalAnd the heaven and Him Who built it,
Arberry By the heaven and That which built it
ShakirAnd the heaven and Him Who made it,
Sarwarby the heavens and that (Power) which established them,
KhalifaThe sky and Him who built it.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the heaven and Him Who built it;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the sky and He who constructed it
Malikby the heaven and Him Who made it;[5]
QXPAnd the sky and its wondrous design.
Maulana AliAnd the heaven and its make!

91:6 والارض وماطحاها


TransliterationWaal-ardi wama tahaha
LiteralAnd/by the earth/Planet Earth and who spread and extended it .

Yusuf AliBy the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
PickthalAnd the earth and Him Who spread it,
Arberry and by the earth and That which extended it!
ShakirAnd the earth and Him Who extended it,
Sarwarby the earth and that (Power) which spread it out
KhalifaThe earth and Him who sustains it.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the earth and Him Who spread it,
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the earth and He who spread it
Malikby the earth and Him Who spread it;[6]
QXPAnd the earth and its vast expanse!
Maulana AliAnd the earth and its extension!

ash-Shams 091:007

91:7 ونفس وماسواها


TransliterationWanafsin wama sawwaha
LiteralAnd/by a self and who straightened it.

Yusuf AliBy the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
PickthalAnd a soul and Him Who perfected it
Arberry By the soul, and That which shaped it
ShakirAnd the soul and Him Who made it perfect,
Sarwarand by the soul and that (Power) which designed it
KhalifaThe soul and Him who created it.
Hilali/KhanAnd by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
Malikby the soul and Him Who perfected it[7]
QXPConsider the human 'Self, and how it is capable for being balanced out.
Maulana AliAnd the soul and its perfection! --
Free MindsAnd a soul and what He made.
Qaribullah by the soul and Who shaped it

George Saleby the soul, and Him who completely formed it,
JM RodwellBy a Soul and Him who balanced it,

AsadConsider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be,



ash-Shams 091:008

91:8 فالهمها فجورها وتقواها


TransliterationFaalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha
LiteralSo He inspired/transmitted (to) it its debauchery/corruption, and its fear and obedience of God.

Yusuf AliAnd its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
PickthalAnd inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it.
Arberry and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing!
ShakirThen He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it;
Sarwarand inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety,.
KhalifaThen showed it what is evil and what is good.
Hilali/KhanThen He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;
H/K/SaheehAnd inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
Malikand inspired it with knowledge of what is wrong for it and what is right for it:[8]
QXPAnd how it is instilled with the capacity to disintegrate or become secure.
Maulana AliSo He reveals to it its way of evil and its way of good;
Free MindsSo He gave it its evil and good.
Qaribullah and inspired it with its sin and its piety,

George Saleand inspired into the same its faculty of distinguishing, and power of choosing, wickedness and piety:
JM RodwellAnd breathed into it its wickedness and its piety,

Asadand how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God!



ash-Shams 091:009

91:9 قد افلح من زكاها


TransliterationQad aflaha man zakkaha
LiteralWho purified/corrected it had succeeded/won.

Yusuf AliTruly he succeeds that purifies it,
PickthalHe is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,
Arberry Prosperous is he who purifies it,
ShakirHe will indeed be successful who purifies it,
Sarwarthose who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness
KhalifaSuccessful is one who redeems it.
Hilali/KhanIndeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).
H/K/SaheehHe has succeeded who purifies it,
Malikindeed successful will be the one who keeps it pure,[9]
QXPSuccessful indeed is he who grows the 'Self'.
Maulana AliHe is indeed successful who causes it to grow,
Free MindsSuccessful is the one who betters it.
Qaribullah prosperous is he who purified it,

George SaleNow is he who hath purified the same, happy;
JM RodwellBlessed now is he who hath kept it pure,

AsadTo a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity,



ash-Shams 091:010

91:10 وقد خاب من دساها


TransliterationWaqad khaba man dassaha
LiteralAnd who buried it/plotted against it (corrupted it) had failed/despaired .

Yusuf AliAnd he fails that corrupts it!
PickthalAnd he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.
Arberry and failed has he who seduces it.
ShakirAnd he will indeed fail who corrupts it.
Sarwarand those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness).
KhalifaFailing is one who neglects it.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).
H/K/SaheehAnd he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
Malikand indeed failure will be the one who corrupts it![10]
QXPAnd failure is indeed he who keeps it buried (under ignorance and superstition).
Maulana AliAnd he indeed fails who buries it.
Free MindsAnd failing is the one who buries it.
Qaribullah and failed is he who buried it!

George Salebut he who hath corrupted the same, is miserable.
JM RodwellAnd undone is he who hath corrupted it!

Asadand truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness].



ash-Shams 091:011

91:11 كذبت ثمود بطغواها


TransliterationKaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha
LiteralThamud had lied/denied/falsified with its own tyranny/excess of the limit .

Yusuf AliThe Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
Pickthal(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride,
Arberry Thamood cried lies in their insolence
ShakirSamood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy,
SarwarThe people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness
KhalifaThamoud's disbelief caused them to transgress.
Hilali/KhanThamood (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin).
H/K/SaheehThamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
MalikThe people of Thamud denied the truth because of their arrogant transgression[11]
QXP(Disregarding this principle) Thamud rejected (Saleh) while playing God. ('Tagha' = Being 'Taghut' = Becoming a false god = Playing God = Transgressing = Rebelling = Crossing bounds of decency = Extreme arrogance).
Maulana AliThamud rejected (the truth) in their inordinacy,
Free MindsThamud denied their transgression.
Qaribullah Thamood belied in their pride

George SaleThamud accused their prophet Saleh of imposture, through the excess of their wickedness:
JM RodwellThemoud in his impiety rejected the message of the Lord,

AsadTO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud,

91:12 اذ انبعث اشقاها


TransliterationIthi inbaAAatha ashqaha
LiteralWhen/if its most miserable/unhappy stirred up/urged .

Yusuf AliBehold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
PickthalWhen the basest of them broke forth
Arberry when the most wretched of them uprose,
ShakirWhen the most unfortunate of them broke forth with
Sarwarwhen the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil).
KhalifaThey followed the worst among them.
Hilali/KhanWhen the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).
H/K/SaheehWhen the most wretched of them was sent forth.
Malikwhen the most wicked man among them was deputed to kill the she-camel.[12]
QXPBehold, the most forward among them was picked up for defiance.
Maulana AliWhen the basest of them broke forth with mischief --
Free MindsThey followed the worst amongst them.
Qaribullah when the most wicked of them broke forth,

George SaleWhen the wretch among them was sent to slay the camel;
JM RodwellWhen the greatest wretch among them rushed up:-

Asadwhen that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed],



ash-Shams 091:013

91:13 فقال لهم رسول الله ناقة الله وسقياها


TransliterationFaqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqata Allahi wasuqyaha
LiteralSo God's messenger said to them: "God's female camel, and its drink/drinking (water)."

Yusuf AliBut the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!"
PickthalAnd the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink!
Arberry then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!'
ShakirSo Allah's messenger said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink.
SarwarThe Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water".
KhalifaGOD's messenger said to them, "This is GOD's camel; let her drink."
Hilali/KhanBut the Messenger of Allah (Salih (Saleh) ) said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!"
H/K/SaheehAnd the messenger of Allah [êaliú] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
MalikThe Messenger of Allah warned them, saying: "This is Allah’s She-camel do not molest her! Let her drink on her turn."[13]
QXPAlthough Allah's Messenger had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to Allah, so let her drink!" (The land belongs to Allah, and this she-camel represents the weak among you (7:73), (26:155)).
Maulana AliSo Allah’s messenger said to them: (Leave alone) Allah’s she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink.
Free MindsGod's messenger said to them: "This is God's camel, let her drink."
Qaribullah the Messenger of Allah said to them: '( This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink. '

George Saleand the Apostle of God said unto them, let alone the camel of God; and hinder not her drinking.
JM RodwellSaid the Apostle of God to them,-"The Camel of God! let her drink."

Asadalthough God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!"



ash-Shams 091:014

91:14 فكذبوه فعقروها فدمدم عليهم ربهم بذنبهم فسواها


TransliterationFakaththaboohu faAAaqarooha fadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha
LiteralSo they denied him , so they wounded it/slaughtered it/made it infertile, so their Lord became angry/destroyed on them because of their crime, so He straightened it.

Yusuf AliThen they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
PickthalBut they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings).
Arberry But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them:
ShakirBut they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground).
SarwarHowever, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins.
KhalifaThey disbelieved him and slaughtered her. Their Lord then requited them for their sin and annihilated them.
Hilali/KhanThen they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!
H/K/SaheehBut they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
MalikThey disbelieved him and hamstrung her. Therefore, for that crime, their Lord let loose His scourge upon them and leveled them to the ground.[14]
QXPBut they denied him and they killed her. Their Lord then doomed them all alike for their lagging behind in compliance.
Maulana AliBut they called him a liar and slaughtered her. So their Lord destroyed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground);
Free MindsThey disbelieved him, and they killed her. So their Lord repaid them for their sin and levelled it.
Qaribullah But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village).

George SaleBut they charged him with imposture; and they slew her. Wherefore their Lord destroyed them, for their crime, and made their punishment equal unto them all:
JM RodwellBut they treated him as an impostor and hamstrung her. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime, and visited all alike:

AsadBut they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them wwith utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike:



ash-Shams 091:015

91:15 ولايخاف عقباها


TransliterationWala yakhafu AAuqbaha
LiteralAnd He does not fear its end/turn (result).

Yusuf AliAnd for Him is no fear of its consequences.
PickthalHe dreadeth not the sequel (of events).
Arberry and He fears not the issue thereof.
ShakirAnd He fears not its consequence.
SarwarGod is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed.
KhalifaYet, those who came after them remain heedless.
Hilali/KhanAnd He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.
H/K/SaheehAnd He does not fear the consequence thereof.
MalikFor He (Allah) has no fear of its consequences.[15]
QXPFor none of them had any fear of what might befall them.
Maulana AliAnd He fears not its consequence.
Free MindsYet, those who came after remain heedless.
Qaribullah He does not fear the result (of their destruction).

George SaleAnd he feareth not the issue thereof.
JM RodwellNor feared he the issue.

Asadfor none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them.
