| 91:1 سورة الشمس بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والشمس وضحاها |

| Literal | And/by the sun and its sunrise/day light . |

| 91:2 والقمر اذا تلاها |

| Transliteration | Waalqamari itha talaha |
| Literal | And/by the moon when/if it followed it. |
| |

| Yusuf Ali | By the Moon as she follows him; |
| Pickthal | And the moon when she followeth him, |
| Arberry | and by the moon when she follows him, |
| Shakir | And the moon when it follows the sun, |
| Sarwar | by the moon when it follows the sun, |

| 91:3 والنهار اذا جلاها |

| Transliteration | Waalnnahari itha jallaha |
| Literal | And/by the daytime when/if it shined/revealed it . |

| Yusuf Ali | By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; |
| Pickthal | And the day when it revealeth him, |
| Arberry | and by the day when it displays him |
| Shakir | And the day when it shows it, |
| Sarwar | by the day when it brightens the earth, |

| 91:4 والليل اذا يغشاها |

| Literal | And/by the night when/if it covers/darkens it . |

| Pickthal | And the night when it enshroudeth him, |
| Arberry | and by the night when it enshrouds him! |
| Shakir | And the night when it draws a veil over it, |
| Sarwar | by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, |

| 91:5 والسماء ومابناها |
| |

| Transliteration | Waalssama-i wama banaha |
| Literal | And/by the sky/space and who built/constructed it. |

| Yusuf Ali | By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; |
| Pickthal | And the heaven and Him Who built it, |
| Arberry | By the heaven and That which built it |
| Shakir | And the heaven and Him Who made it, |

| 91:6 والارض وماطحاها |

| Transliteration | Waal-ardi wama tahaha |
| Literal | And/by the earth/Planet Earth and who spread and extended it . |
| |

| Yusuf Ali | By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: |
| Pickthal | And the earth and Him Who spread it, |
| Arberry | and by the earth and That which extended it! |
| Shakir | And the earth and Him Who extended it, |
| Sarwar | by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out |
| Khalifa | The earth and Him who sustains it. |

ash-Shams 091:007
| 91:7 ونفس وماسواها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Wanafsin wama sawwaha |
| Literal | And/by a self and who straightened it. |

| Yusuf Ali | By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; |
| Pickthal | And a soul and Him Who perfected it |
| Arberry | By the soul, and That which shaped it |
| Shakir | And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, |
| Sarwar | and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it |
| Khalifa | The soul and Him who created it. |
| Hilali/Khan | And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; |

ash-Shams 091:008
| 91:8 فالهمها فجورها وتقواها |
| |

| Transliteration | Faalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha |
| Literal | So He inspired/transmitted (to) it its debauchery/corruption, and its fear and obedience of God. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- |
| Pickthal | And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. |
| Arberry | and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! |
| Shakir | Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; |
| Sarwar | and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety,. |
| Khalifa | Then showed it what is evil and what is good. |
| Hilali/Khan | Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him; |
| H/K/Saheeh | And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, |
| Malik | and inspired it with knowledge of what is wrong for it and what is right for it:[8] |
| QXP | And how it is instilled with the capacity to disintegrate or become secure. |
| Maulana Ali | So He reveals to it its way of evil and its way of good; |
| Free Minds | So He gave it its evil and good. |
| Qaribullah | and inspired it with its sin and its piety, |
| |
|
| George Sale | and inspired into the same its faculty of distinguishing, and power of choosing, wickedness and piety: |
| JM Rodwell | And breathed into it its wickedness and its piety, |

| Asad | and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! |
ash-Shams 091:009
| 91:9 قد افلح من زكاها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Qad aflaha man zakkaha |
| Literal | Who purified/corrected it had succeeded/won. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | Truly he succeeds that purifies it, |
| Pickthal | He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, |
| Arberry | Prosperous is he who purifies it, |
| Shakir | He will indeed be successful who purifies it, |
| Sarwar | those who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness |
| Khalifa | Successful is one who redeems it. |
| Hilali/Khan | Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). |
| H/K/Saheeh | He has succeeded who purifies it, |
| Malik | indeed successful will be the one who keeps it pure,[9] |
| QXP | Successful indeed is he who grows the 'Self'. |
| Maulana Ali | He is indeed successful who causes it to grow, |
| Free Minds | Successful is the one who betters it. |
| Qaribullah | prosperous is he who purified it, |
| |
|
| George Sale | Now is he who hath purified the same, happy; |
| JM Rodwell | Blessed now is he who hath kept it pure, |

| Asad | To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, |
ash-Shams 091:010
| 91:10 وقد خاب من دساها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Waqad khaba man dassaha |
| Literal | And who buried it/plotted against it (corrupted it) had failed/despaired . |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | And he fails that corrupts it! |
| Pickthal | And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. |
| Arberry | and failed has he who seduces it. |
| Shakir | And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. |
| Sarwar | and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). |
| Khalifa | Failing is one who neglects it. |
| Hilali/Khan | And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). |
| H/K/Saheeh | And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. |
| Malik | and indeed failure will be the one who corrupts it![10] |
| QXP | And failure is indeed he who keeps it buried (under ignorance and superstition). |
| Maulana Ali | And he indeed fails who buries it. |
| Free Minds | And failing is the one who buries it. |
| Qaribullah | and failed is he who buried it! |
| |
|
| George Sale | but he who hath corrupted the same, is miserable. |
| JM Rodwell | And undone is he who hath corrupted it! |
| |

| Asad | and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. |
ash-Shams 091:011
| 91:11 كذبت ثمود بطغواها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Kaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha |
| Literal | Thamud had lied/denied/falsified with its own tyranny/excess of the limit . |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, |
| Pickthal | (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, |
| Arberry | Thamood cried lies in their insolence |
| Shakir | Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, |
| Sarwar | The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness |
| Khalifa | Thamoud's disbelief caused them to transgress. |
| Hilali/Khan | Thamood (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin). |
| H/K/Saheeh | Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, |
| Malik | The people of Thamud denied the truth because of their arrogant transgression[11] |
| QXP | (Disregarding this principle) Thamud rejected (Saleh) while playing God. ('Tagha' = Being 'Taghut' = Becoming a false god = Playing God = Transgressing = Rebelling = Crossing bounds of decency = Extreme arrogance). |
| Maulana Ali | Thamud rejected (the truth) in their inordinacy, |
| Free Minds | Thamud denied their transgression. |
| Qaribullah | Thamood belied in their pride |
| |
|
| George Sale | Thamud accused their prophet Saleh of imposture, through the excess of their wickedness: |
| JM Rodwell | Themoud in his impiety rejected the message of the Lord, |
| |
|
| Asad | TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, |

| 91:12 اذ انبعث اشقاها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Ithi inbaAAatha ashqaha |
| Literal | When/if its most miserable/unhappy stirred up/urged . |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). |
| Pickthal | When the basest of them broke forth |
| Arberry | when the most wretched of them uprose, |
| Shakir | When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with |
| Sarwar | when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil). |
| Khalifa | They followed the worst among them. |
| Hilali/Khan | When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). |
| H/K/Saheeh | When the most wretched of them was sent forth. |
| Malik | when the most wicked man among them was deputed to kill the she-camel.[12] |
| QXP | Behold, the most forward among them was picked up for defiance. |
| Maulana Ali | When the basest of them broke forth with mischief -- |
| Free Minds | They followed the worst amongst them. |
| Qaribullah | when the most wicked of them broke forth, |

| George Sale | When the wretch among them was sent to slay the camel; |
| JM Rodwell | When the greatest wretch among them rushed up:- |

| Asad | when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed], |
ash-Shams 091:013
| 91:13 فقال لهم رسول الله ناقة الله وسقياها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Faqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqata Allahi wasuqyaha |
| Literal | So God's messenger said to them: "God's female camel, and its drink/drinking (water)." |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" |
| Pickthal | And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! |
| Arberry | then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' |
| Shakir | So Allah's messenger said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink. |
| Sarwar | The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". |
| Khalifa | GOD's messenger said to them, "This is GOD's camel; let her drink." |
| Hilali/Khan | But the Messenger of Allah (Salih (Saleh) ) said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" |
| H/K/Saheeh | And the messenger of Allah [êaliú] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." |
| Malik | The Messenger of Allah warned them, saying: "This is Allah’s She-camel do not molest her! Let her drink on her turn."[13] |
| QXP | Although Allah's Messenger had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to Allah, so let her drink!" (The land belongs to Allah, and this she-camel represents the weak among you (7:73), (26:155)). |
| Maulana Ali | So Allah’s messenger said to them: (Leave alone) Allah’s she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink. |
| Free Minds | God's messenger said to them: "This is God's camel, let her drink." |
| Qaribullah | the Messenger of Allah said to them: '( This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink. ' |

| George Sale | and the Apostle of God said unto them, let alone the camel of God; and hinder not her drinking. |
| JM Rodwell | Said the Apostle of God to them,-"The Camel of God! let her drink." |

| Asad | although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" |
ash-Shams 091:014
| 91:14 فكذبوه فعقروها فدمدم عليهم ربهم بذنبهم فسواها |

| Transliteration | Fakaththaboohu faAAaqarooha fadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha |
| Literal | So they denied him , so they wounded it/slaughtered it/made it infertile, so their Lord became angry/destroyed on them because of their crime, so He straightened it. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)! |
| Pickthal | But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). |
| Arberry | But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: |
| Shakir | But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). |
| Sarwar | However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. |
| Khalifa | They disbelieved him and slaughtered her. Their Lord then requited them for their sin and annihilated them. |
| Hilali/Khan | Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! |
| H/K/Saheeh | But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. |
| Malik | They disbelieved him and hamstrung her. Therefore, for that crime, their Lord let loose His scourge upon them and leveled them to the ground.[14] |
| QXP | But they denied him and they killed her. Their Lord then doomed them all alike for their lagging behind in compliance. |
| Maulana Ali | But they called him a liar and slaughtered her. So their Lord destroyed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground); |
| Free Minds | They disbelieved him, and they killed her. So their Lord repaid them for their sin and levelled it. |
| Qaribullah | But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). |
| |
|
| George Sale | But they charged him with imposture; and they slew her. Wherefore their Lord destroyed them, for their crime, and made their punishment equal unto them all: |
| JM Rodwell | But they treated him as an impostor and hamstrung her. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime, and visited all alike: |

| Asad | But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them wwith utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: |
ash-Shams 091:015
| 91:15 ولايخاف عقباها |
| |
|
| Transliteration | Wala yakhafu AAuqbaha |
| Literal | And He does not fear its end/turn (result). |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | And for Him is no fear of its consequences. |
| Pickthal | He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). |
| Arberry | and He fears not the issue thereof. |
| Shakir | And He fears not its consequence. |
| Sarwar | God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. |
| Khalifa | Yet, those who came after them remain heedless. |
| Hilali/Khan | And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. |
| H/K/Saheeh | And He does not fear the consequence thereof. |
| Malik | For He (Allah) has no fear of its consequences.[15] |
| QXP | For none of them had any fear of what might befall them. |
| Maulana Ali | And He fears not its consequence. |
| Free Minds | Yet, those who came after remain heedless. |
| Qaribullah | He does not fear the result (of their destruction). |
