90:1 سورة البلد بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ لااقسم بهذا البلد


TransliterationLa oqsimu bihatha albaladi
LiteralI do not swear/make oath with that, the country/land .

Yusuf AliI do call to witness this City;-
PickthalNay, I swear by this city -
Arberry No! I swear by this land,
ShakirNay! I swear by this city.
SarwarI do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca)
KhalifaI solemnly swear by this town.
Hilali/KhanI swear by this city (Makkah);
H/K/SaheehI swear by this city, Makkah
MalikI swear by this city [1]
QXPNay, I present this very Town as witness.
Maulana AliNay, I call to witness this City!

al-Balad 090:002

90:2 وانت حل بهذا البلد


TransliterationWaanta hillun bihatha albaladi
LiteralAnd you are placed in/occupying (residing) at this , the country/land.

Yusuf AliAnd thou art a freeman of this City;-
PickthalAnd thou art an indweller of this city -
Arberry and thou art a lodger in this land;
ShakirAnd you shall be made free from obligation in this city--
Sarwarin which you are now living
KhalifaThe town where you live.
Hilali/KhanAnd you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah) ,
H/K/SaheehAnd you, [O Muúammad], are free of restriction in this city
Malikwhere to assassinate) you (O Muhammad) have been made lawful in this city,[2]
QXPThe Town where (O Prophet) you have lived.
Maulana AliAnd thou wilt be made free from obligation in this City --
Free MindsAnd you remain committed to this land.
Qaribullah and you are a lodger in this country.

George Sale-- and thou, O prophet, residest in this territory, --
JM RodwellThis soil on which thou dost dwell,

Asadthis land in which thou art free to dwell -



al-Balad 090:003

90:3 ووالد وماولد


TransliterationWawalidin wama walada
LiteralAnd a father and what he gave birth (to)/procreated.

Yusuf AliAnd (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
PickthalAnd the begetter and that which he begat,
Arberry by the begetter, and that he begot,
ShakirAnd the begetter and whom he begot.
Sarwaror by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael)
KhalifaThe begetting and the begotten.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the begetter (i.e. Adam ) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
MalikAnd I swear by your father (Adam) and the children he begot (mankind),[3]
QXPAnd where your ancestors have multiplied. (A Sanctuary for peace for everyone).
Maulana AliAnd the begetter and he whom he begot!
Free MindsAnd a father and what he begets.
Qaribullah And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered,

George Saleand by the begetter, and that which He hath begotten;
JM RodwellOr by sire and offspring!

90:4 لقد خلقنا الانسان في كبد


TransliterationLaqad khalaqna al-insana fee kabadin
LiteralWe had created the human/mankind in hardship .

Yusuf AliVerily We have created man into toil and struggle.
PickthalWe verily have created man in an atmosphere:
Arberry indeed, We created man in trouble.
ShakirCertainly We have created man to be in distress.
Sarwarthat We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship.
KhalifaWe created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself).
Hilali/KhanVerily, We have created man in toil.
H/K/SaheehWe have certainly created man into hardship.
Malikcertainly We have created man to be in stress.[4]
QXPVerily, We have created the human being for hard work. (This is the Town where Abraham and Ishmael labored, and where you began your toil to raise the Name of your Lord (2:125-127)).
Maulana AliWe have certainly created man to face difficulties.
Free MindsWe have created man to struggle.
Qaribullah We created the human in fatigue.

George Saleverily We have created man in misery.
JM RodwellSurely in trouble have we created man.

AsadVerily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial.



al-Balad 090:005

90:5 ايحسب ان لن يقدر عليه احد


TransliterationAyahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun
LiteralDoes he think/suppose that no one is capable/over powering on (over) him?

Yusuf AliThinketh he, that none hath power over him?
PickthalThinketh he that none hath power over him?
Arberry What, does he think none has power over him,
ShakirDoes he think that no one has power over him?
SarwarDoes He think that no one will ever have control over him?.
KhalifaDoes he think that no one will ever call him to account?
Hilali/KhanThinks he that none can overcome him?
H/K/SaheehDoes he think that never will anyone overcome him?
MalikDoes he think that none has power over him?[5]
QXPDoes he think that none has Power over him?

al-Balad 090:006

90:6 يقول اهلكت مالا لبدا


TransliterationYaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan
LiteralHe says: "I destroyed/wasted plenty property/possession/wealth."

Yusuf AliHe may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
PickthalAnd he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
Arberry saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'?
ShakirHe shall say: I have wasted much wealth.
Sarwar(He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)".
KhalifaHe boasts, "I spent so much money!"
Hilali/KhanHe says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!"
H/K/SaheehHe says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
MalikHe may boast: "I have squandered wealth in abundance!"[6]
QXPHe keeps boasting, "I have wasted so much wealth!"
Maulana AliHe will say: I have wasted much wealth.
Free MindsHe says: "I spent so much money!"
Qaribullah He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth. '

George SaleHe saith, I have wasted plenty of riches.
JM RodwellI have wasted, saith he, "enormous riches!"

AsadHe boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!"

90:7 ايحسب ان لم يره احد


TransliterationAyahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun
LiteralDoes he think/suppose that (E) no one sees him?

Yusuf AliThinketh he that none beholdeth him?
PickthalThinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Arberry What, does he think none has seen him?
ShakirDoes he think that no one sees him?
SarwarDoes he think that no one has seen him?.
KhalifaDoes he think that no one sees him?

90:8 الم نجعل له عينين


TransliterationAlam najAAal lahu AAaynayni
LiteralDid We not make/create for him two eyes?

Yusuf AliHave We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
PickthalDid We not assign unto him two eyes
Arberry Have We not appointed to him two eyes,
ShakirHave We not given him two eyes,
SarwarHave We not given him two eyes,.
KhalifaDid we not give him two eyes?
Hilali/KhanHave We not made for him a pair of eyes?

MalikHave We not given him two eyes to observe?[8]

90:9 ولسانا وشفتين


TransliterationWalisanan washafatayni
LiteralAnd a tongue , and two lips?

Yusuf AliAnd a tongue, and a pair of lips?-

Arberry and a tongue, and two lips,
ShakirAnd a tongue and two lips,
Sarwara tongue, and two lips?.

90:10 وهديناه النجدين


TransliterationWahadaynahu alnnajdayni
LiteralAnd We guided him (to) the two paths/good or bad ?

Yusuf AliAnd shown him the two highways?
PickthalAnd guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
Arberry and guided him on the two highways?
ShakirAnd pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways?
SarwarHave We not shown him the ways of good and evil?.
KhalifaDid we not show him the two paths?
Hilali/KhanAnd shown him the two ways (good and evil)?
H/K/SaheehAnd have shown him the two ways?
MalikThen shown him the two high ways (good leading towards paradise and evil leading towards hell)?[10]
QXPAnd shown him the two highways? (Of virtue and vice).
Maulana AliAnd pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways?

Qaribullah and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)?

al-Balad 090:011

90:11 فلا اقتحم العقبة


TransliterationFala iqtahama alAAaqabata
LiteralSo he did not rush/force (himself) into the high mountain path/road ?

Yusuf AliBut he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
PickthalBut he hath not attempted the Ascent -
Arberry Yet he has not assaulted the steep;
ShakirBut he would not attempt the uphill road,
SarwarYet, he has not entered into Aqaba.
KhalifaHe should choose the difficult path.
Hilali/KhanBut he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep.
H/K/SaheehBut he has not broken through the difficult pass.
MalikYet he does not attempt to tackle the Aqabah (steep path)![11]
QXPBut he hardly tries the uphill road, the Ascent.
Maulana AliBut he attempts not the uphill road;
Free MindsHe should choose the difficult path.
Qaribullah Yet he has not scaled the height.

George SaleYet he attempteth not the cliff.
JM RodwellYet he attempted not the steep.

AsadBut he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road...



al-Balad 090:012

90:12 وماادراك ماالعقبة


TransliterationWama adraka ma alAAaqabatu
LiteralAnd what made you know/informed you what the high mountain path/road (is) ?

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-
PickthalAh, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -
Arberry and what shall teach thee what is the steep?
ShakirAnd what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is?
SarwarWould that you knew what Aqaba is!
KhalifaWhich one is the difficult path?
Hilali/KhanAnd what will make you know the path that is steep?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
MalikAnd what will explain to you what the Aqabah is?[12]
QXPAh, what will convey unto you what that Ascent is!
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee comprehend what the uphill road is?
Free MindsDo you know which is the difficult path?
Qaribullah What could let you know what the height is!

George SaleWhat shall make thee to understand what the cliff is?
JM RodwellAnd who shall teach thee what the steep is?

AsadAnd what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road?



al-Balad 090:013

90:13 فك رقبة


TransliterationFakku raqabatin
LiteralReleasing/freeing a neck/person/slave.

Yusuf Ali(It is:) freeing the bondman;
Pickthal(It is) to free a slave,
Arberry The freeing of a slave,
Shakir(It is) the setting free of a slave,
SarwarIt is the setting free of a slave
KhalifaThe freeing of slaves.
Hilali/Khan(It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.)
H/K/SaheehIt is the freeing of a slave
MalikIt is the freeing of a neck (slave) from bondage;[13]
QXP- Freeing others from bondage, physical or mental, and from any social, economic or political oppression. (Freeing the neck includes all the above meanings plus striving to establish the Divine System wherein the only Master is Allah's Law).
Maulana Ali(It is) to free a slave,
Free MindsThe freeing of slaves.
Qaribullah (It is) the freeing of a slave,

George SaleIt is to free the captive;
JM RodwellIt is to ransom the captive,

Asad[It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin],



al-Balad 090:014

90:14 او اطعام في يوم ذي مسغبة


TransliterationAw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin
LiteralOr feeding in a day/time of hunger/starvation/famine.

Yusuf AliOr the giving of food in a day of privation
PickthalAnd to feed in the day of hunger.
Arberry or giving food upon a day of hunger
ShakirOr the giving of food in a day of hunger
Sarwaror, in a day of famine, the feeding of
KhalifaFeeding, during the time of hardship.
Hilali/KhanOr giving food in a day of hunger (famine),
H/K/SaheehOr feeding on a day of severe hunger
Malikor the giving of food in a day of famine[14]
QXP- And to feed in times of hunger, famine, wars and natural disasters.

90:15 يتيما ذا مقربة


TransliterationYateeman tha maqrabatin
LiteralAn orphan of a relation/near/close.

Yusuf AliTo the orphan with claims of relationship,
PickthalAn orphan near of kin,
Arberry to an orphan near of kin
ShakirTo an orphan, having relationship,
Sarwaran orphaned relative
KhalifaOrphans who are related.
Hilali/KhanTo an orphan near of kin.
H/K/SaheehAn orphan of near relationship
Malikto an orphan relative,[15]
QXP- And to take special care of those who despite being a part of the community feel left out. ('Za maqrabah' = Near one = Relative = Part of the community).

al-Balad 090:016

90:16 او مسكينا ذا متربة


TransliterationAw miskeenan tha matrabatin
LiteralOr a poorest of poor/poor oppressed of poverty.

Yusuf AliOr to the indigent (down) in the dust.
PickthalOr some poor wretch in misery,
Arberry or a needy man in misery;
ShakirOr to the poor man lying in the dust.
Sarwarand downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of)
KhalifaOr the poor who is in need.
Hilali/KhanOr to a Miskeen (poor) afflicted with misery.
H/K/SaheehOr a needy person in misery
Malikor to a needy in distress;[16]
QXP- And helping him who remains needy though he toils in dust.
Maulana AliOr the poor man lying in the dust.
Free MindsOr a poor person in need.
Qaribullah or to a needy person in distress;

George Saleor the poor man who lieth on the ground.
JM RodwellBeside this, to be of those who believe, and enjoin stedfastness on each other, and enjoin compassion on each other.

al-Balad 090:017

90:17 ثم كان من الذين امنوا وتواصوا بالصبر وتواصوا بالمرحمة


TransliterationThumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati
LiteralThen he was from those who believed and directed/commanded each other with the patience, and directed/commanded each other with the mercy/compassion .

Yusuf AliThen will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
PickthalAnd to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.
Arberry then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful.
ShakirThen he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion.
Sarwarthe believers who cooperate with others in patience ( steadfastness) and kindness.
KhalifaAnd being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind.
Hilali/KhanThen he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion.
H/K/SaheehAnd then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Malikbesides this, he should be of those who believe, enjoin fortitude, encourage kindness and compassion.[17]
QXP- And to be of those who have chosen to be graced with belief, and become living reminders of perseverance and living reminders of compassion.
Maulana AliThen he is of those who believe and exhort one another to patience, and exhort one another to mercy.
Free MindsThen he has become one of those who have believed, and exhort one another to patience, and exhort one another to kindness.
Qaribullah so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful.

George SaleWhoso doth this, and is one of those who believe, and recommend perseverance unto each other, and recommend mercy unto each other;
JM RodwellThese shall be the people of the right hand:

Asadand being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion.



al-Balad 090:018

90:18 اولئك اصحاب الميمنة


TransliterationOla-ika as-habu almaymanati
LiteralThose are the blessings'/right's (side's/hand's) owners/friends/company.

Yusuf AliSuch are the Companions of the Right Hand.
PickthalTheir place will be on the right hand.
Arberry Those are the Companions of the Right Hand.
ShakirThese are the people of the right hand.
SarwarThese are the people of the right hand.
KhalifaThese have deserved happiness.
Hilali/KhanThey are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise),
H/K/SaheehThose are the companions of the right.
MalikSuch are the people of the right hand (going towards paradise).[18]
QXPSuch are the ones hand in hand with Bliss.
Maulana AliThese are the people of the right hand.
Free MindsThose are the people of happiness.
Qaribullah Those are the Companions of the Right.

George Salethese shall be the companions of the right-hand.
JM RodwellWhile they who disbelieve our signs,

AsadSuch are they that have attained to righteousness;



al-Balad 090:019

90:19 والذين كفروا باياتنا هم اصحاب المشئمة


TransliterationWaallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatina hum as-habu almash-amati
LiteralAnd those who disbelieved with Our verses/evidences , they are the bad omen's/left side's owners/friends/company.

Yusuf AliBut those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
PickthalBut those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.
Arberry And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand;
ShakirAnd (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand.
SarwarAs for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left
KhalifaAs for those who disbelieved in our revelations, they have incurred misery.
Hilali/KhanBut those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell).
H/K/SaheehBut they who disbelieved in Our signs those are the companions of the left.
MalikBut those who disbelieve Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand (going towards hell),[19]
QXPAnd those who deny Our Messages, such are the ones hand in hand with despondence.
Maulana AliAnd those who disbelieve in Our messages, they are the people of the left hand.
Free MindsAs for those who rejected Our revelations, they are the people of misery.
Qaribullah But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left,

George SaleBut they who shall disbelieve our signs, shall be the companions of the left-hand:
JM RodwellShall be the people of the left.

Asadwhereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil,



al-Balad 090:020

90:20 عليهم نار مؤصدة


TransliterationAAalayhim narun mu/sadatun
LiteralStationary/residing fire (is) on them.

Yusuf AliOn them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
PickthalFire will be an awning over them.
Arberry over them is a Fire covered down.
ShakirOn them is fire closed over.
Sarwarwho will be engulfed in the fire.
KhalifaThey will be confined in the Hellfire.
Hilali/KhanThe Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet.
H/K/SaheehOver them will be fire closed in.
Malikhaving fire all around them.[20]
QXPWith Fire all around them.
Maulana AliOn them is Fire closed over.
Free MindsUpon them is a Fire closed over.
Qaribullah with the Fire closed above them.

George SaleAbove them shall be arched fire.
JM RodwellAround them the fire shall close.

Asad[with] fire closing in upon them.
