79:1 سورة النازعات بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والنازعات غرقا


TransliterationWaalnnaziAAati gharqan
LiteralAnd/by the strangers/life extractors , exaggerating/absorbing (violently) .

Yusuf AliBy the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence;
PickthalBy those who drag forth to destruction,
Arberry By those that pluck out vehemently
ShakirI swear by the angels who violently pull out the souls of the wicked,
SarwarBy the angels who violently tear-out the souls of the disbelievers from their bodies,
KhalifaThe (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly.
Hilali/KhanBy those (angels) who pull out (the souls of the disbelievers and the wicked) with great violence;
H/K/SaheehBy those [angels] who extract with violence
MalikBy those angels who violently pull out the souls of the wrongdoers,[1]
QXPConsider those who dive to bring up. (Pearls from the ocean. People from repression).
Maulana AliBy those yearning vehemently!

Qaribullah By the pluckers (the angels of death), violently plucking (the souls of the unbelievers),

79:2 والناشطات نشطا


TransliterationWaalnnashitati nashtan
LiteralAnd/by the active/pullers , actively/pulling .

Yusuf AliBy those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed);
PickthalBy the meteors rushing,
Arberry and those that draw out violently,
ShakirAnd by those who gently draw out the souls of the blessed,
Sarwarby the angels who gently release the souls of the believers,
KhalifaAnd those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully.
Hilali/KhanBy those (angels) who gently take out (the souls of the believers);
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] those who remove with ease
Malikand those who gently draw out the souls of the righteous,[2]
QXPAnd move steadily in jubilation, releasing (the oppressed from bondage).
Maulana AliAnd those going forth cheerfully!

Qaribullah by the drawers (the angels of death), gently drawing (the souls of the believers),

George Saleand by those who draw forth the souls of others with gentleness;

79:3 والسابحات سبحا


TransliterationWaalssabihati sabhan
LiteralAnd/by the ships/stars/fast (could be angels), tending to the livelihood/floating .

Yusuf AliAnd by those who glide along (on errands of mercy),
PickthalBy the lone stars floating,
Arberry by those that swim serenely
ShakirAnd by those who float in space,
Sarwarby the angels who float (in the heavens by the will of God),
KhalifaAnd those floating everywhere.
Hilali/KhanAnd by those that swim along (i.e. angels or planets in their orbits, etc.).
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] those who glide [as if] swimming
Malikand those who glide about swiftly through space,[3]
QXPAnd working hard, swimming in strides.
Maulana AliAnd those running swiftly!

George Saleby those who glide swimmingly through the air with the commands of God;

79:4 فالسابقات سبقا


TransliterationFaalssabiqati sabqan
LiteralSo the racing/surpassing/preceding, racing/surpassing/preceding.

Yusuf AliThen press forward as in a race,
PickthalBy the angels hastening,
Arberry and those that outstrip suddenly
ShakirThen those who are foremost going ahead,
Sarwarby the angels who hasten along
KhalifaEagerly racing with one another -
Hilali/KhanAnd by those that press forward as in a race (i.e. the angels or stars or the horses, etc.).
H/K/SaheehAnd those who race each other in a race
Malikthen speed headlong to carry out the commands of Allah,[4]
QXPAnd then together racing to progress.
Maulana AliAnd those that are foremost going ahead!
Free MindsAnd those that press forward in a race.
Qaribullah and the outstrippers (angels), outstripping,

George Saleand those who precede and usher the righteous to paradise;
JM RodwellBy those who are foremost with foremost speed;

Asadand yet overtake [one another] with swift overtaking:



an-Nazi'at 079:005

79:5 فالمدبرات امرا


TransliterationFaalmudabbirati amran
LiteralSo the regulators/arrangers/planners (of) a matter/affair/order/command.

Yusuf AliThen arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord),
PickthalAnd those who govern the event,
Arberry by those that direct an affair!
ShakirThen those who regulate the affair.
Sarwarand by the angels who regulate the affairs, (you will certainly be resurrected).
Khalifato carry out various commands.
Hilali/KhanAnd by those angels who arrange to do the Commands of their Lord, (so verily, you disbelievers will be called to account).
H/K/SaheehAnd those who arrange [each] matter,
Malikand those who regulate the affairs of the world![5]
QXPAnd thus taking charge of their matters.
Maulana AliAnd those regulating the Affair!
Free MindsSo as to carry out a command.
Qaribullah by the managers (angels) affair.

George Saleand those who subordinately govern the affairs of this world:
JM RodwellBy those who conduct the affairs of the universe!

Asadand thus they fulfil the [Creator's] behest!

79:6 يوم ترجف الراجفة


TransliterationYawma tarjufu alrrajifatu
LiteralA day/time the first blow of the horn trembles and shakes/agitates .

Yusuf AliOne Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,
PickthalOn the day when the first trump resoundeth.
Arberry Upon the day when the first blast shivers
ShakirThe day on which the quaking one shall quake,
SarwarOn the day when the first trumpet sound blasts
KhalifaThe day the quake quakes.
Hilali/KhanOn the Day (when the first blowing of the Trumpet is blown), the earth and the mountains will shake violently (and everybody will die),
H/K/SaheehOn the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],
MalikThe Day on which the quake shall cause a violent commotion,[6]
QXPThe Day when the tremulous trembles.
Maulana AliThe day when the quaking one shall quake --

George SaleOn a certain day, the disturbing blast of the trumpet shall disturb the universe;

Asad[HENCE, 4 think of] the Day when a violent convulsion will convulse [the world],



an-Nazi'at 079:007

79:7 تتبعها الرادفة


TransliterationTatbaAAuha alrradifatu
LiteralThe followed closely behind follows it.

Yusuf AliFollowed by oft-repeated (commotions):
PickthalAnd the second followeth it,
Arberry and the second blast follows it,
ShakirWhat must happen afterwards shall follow it.
Sarwarand will be followed by the second one,
KhalifaFollowed by the second blow.
Hilali/KhanThe second blowing of the Trumpet follows it (and everybody will be raised up),
H/K/SaheehThere will follow it the subsequent [one].
Malikwhich will be followed by another violent commotion,[7]
QXPTo be followed by the jolter. (The oppressors are shaken up again and again).
Maulana AliThe consequence will follow it.

79:8 قلوب يومئذ واجفة


TransliterationQuloobun yawma-ithin wajifatun
LiteralHearts (on) that day (are) palpitating/pounding .

Yusuf AliHearts that Day will be in agitation;
PickthalOn that day hearts beat painfully
Arberry hearts upon that day shall be athrob
ShakirHearts on that day shall palpitate,
Sarwarhearts will undergo terrible trembling,.
KhalifaCertain minds will be terrified.
Hilali/Khan(Some) hearts that Day will shake with fear and anxiety.
H/K/SaheehHearts, that Day, will tremble,
Malikand on that Day, hearts shall be pounding with terror[8]
QXPSome hearts throb on that Day.
Maulana AliHearts that day will palpitate,
Free MindsHearts on that Day will be terrified.
Qaribullah hearts will throb on that Day

79:9 ابصارها خاشعة


TransliterationAbsaruha khashiAAatun
LiteralIts eyesight/understanding (is) humble/submissive .

Yusuf AliCast down will be (their owners') eyes.
PickthalWhile eyes are downcast
Arberry and their eyes shall be humbled.
ShakirTheir eyes cast down.
Sarwarand eyes will be humbly cast down.
KhalifaTheir eyes will be subdued.
Hilali/KhanTheir eyes cast down.
H/K/SaheehTheir eyes humbled.
Malikand sight shall be downcast.[9]
QXPTheir eyes subdued.
Maulana AliTheir eyes downcast.

an-Nazi'at 079:010

79:10 يقولون ائنا لمردودون في الحافرة


TransliterationYaqooloona a-inna lamardoodoona fee alhafirati
LiteralThey say: "Are we returning (E) in the first creation ?"

Yusuf AliThey say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?
Pickthal(Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state
Arberry They shall say, 'What, are we being restored as we were before?
ShakirThey say: Shall we indeed be restored to (our) first state?
Sarwar(The disbelievers) say, "Shall we be brought back to life again
KhalifaThey will say, "We have been recreated from the grave!
Hilali/KhanThey say: "Shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state of life?
H/K/SaheehThey are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?
MalikThe unbelievers say: "Shall we really be restored to our former state (life),[10]
QXPThey say, "What! Shall we ever be returned to the ditch of anonymity?" ('Hufrah' = Ditch = Not noteworthy = Lowly = Unremarkable = Insignificant).
Maulana AliThey say: Shall we indeed be restored to (our) first state?
Free MindsThey will Say: "Shall we be returned to live our lives."
Qaribullah They say: 'What, are we being restored as we were before,

George SaleThe infidels say, shall we surely be made to return whence we came?
JM RodwellThe infidels will say, "Shall we indeed be restored as at first?

Asad[And yet,] some say, "What! Are we indeed to be restored to our former state -



an-Nazi'at 079:011

79:11 ائذا كنا عظاما نخرة


TransliterationA-itha kunna AAithaman nakhiratan
LiteralIs (it that) if we were decayed/decomposed bones.

Yusuf Ali"What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?"
PickthalEven after we are crumbled bones?
Arberry What, when we are bones old and wasted?'
ShakirWhat! when we are rotten bones?
Sarwarafter we have become bones and dust?".
Khalifa"How did this happen after we had turned into rotten bones?"
Hilali/Khan"Even after we are crumbled bones?"
H/K/SaheehEven if we should be decayed bones?
Malikwhen we shall have become hollow bones?"[11]
QXP"Shall we ever weaken to skeletal strength?"
Maulana AliWhat! After we are rotten bones?

Qaribullah even after we are fragmented bones? '

Asadeven though we may have become [a heap of] crumbling bones?"



an-Nazi'at 079:012

79:12 قالوا تلك اذا كرة خاسرة


TransliterationQaloo tilka ithan karratun khasiratun
LiteralThey said: "That is then a loosing repetition ."

Yusuf AliThey say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!"
PickthalThey say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.
Arberry They shall say, 'That then were a losing return!'
ShakirThey said: That then would be a return occasioning loss.
SarwarThey have said, "Such a resurrection will certainly be a great loss".
KhalifaThey had said, "This is an impossible recurrence."
Hilali/KhanThey say: "It would in that case, be a return with loss!"
H/K/SaheehThey say, "That, then, would be a losing return."
MalikThey further say: "It would then be a fruitless restoration!"[12]
QXPAnd they say, "In that case, then, it would be an investment of loss!"
Maulana AliThey say: That would then be a return with loss.
Free MindsThey said: "This is an impossible recurrence."
Qaribullah They will say: 'Then we are returned lost! '

George SaleThey say, this then will be a return to loss.
JM RodwellThis then, say they, "will be a return to loss."

Asad[And] they add, "That, then, would be a return with loss!"



an-Nazi'at 079:013

79:13 فانما هي زجرة واحدة


TransliterationFa-innama hiya zajratun wahidatun
LiteralSo but it is one deterrent/cry to drive out .

Yusuf AliBut verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry,
PickthalSurely it will need but one shout,
Arberry But it shall be only a single scare,
ShakirBut it shall be only a single cry,
SarwarHowever, it will only take a single blast
KhalifaAll it takes is one nudge.
Hilali/KhanBut only, it will be a single Zajrah (shout (i.e., the second blowing of the Trumpet)). (See Verse 37:19).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, it will be but one shout,
MalikThey should know that it shall be only a single shout,[13]
QXPBut finally, it is a single swift call.
Maulana AliIt is only a single cry,
Free MindsBut all it takes is one blow.
Qaribullah But it will be only a single blow,

George SaleVerily it will be but one sounding of the trumpet,
JM RodwellVerily, it will be but a single blast,

Asad[But,] then, that [Last Hour] will be [upon them of a sudden, as if it were] but a single accusing cry -

79:14 فاذا هم بالساهرة


TransliterationFa-itha hum bialssahirati
LiteralSo then they are at the Earth's surface .

Yusuf AliWhen, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment).
PickthalAnd lo! they will be awakened.
Arberry and behold, they are awakened.
ShakirWhen lo! they shall be wakeful.
Sarwarto bring them out of their graves and back to life on the earth's surface.
KhalifaWhereupon they get up.
Hilali/KhanWhen, behold, they find themselves over the earth alive after their death,
H/K/SaheehAnd suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.
Malikand they will be back to life in open plain.[14]
QXPAnd, behold, they will be awakened!
Maulana AliWhen lo! they will be awakened.
Free MindsWhereupon they will rise-up.
Qaribullah and they will be upon the surface of the earth (alive).

George Saleand behold, they shall appear alive on the face of the earth.
JM RodwellAnd lo! they are on the surface of the earth.

Asadand then, lo, they will be fully awakened [to the truth]!

79:15 هل اتاك حديث موسى


TransliterationHal ataka hadeethu moosa
LiteralDid Moses' information/speech come to you?

Yusuf AliHas the story of Moses reached thee?
PickthalHath there come unto thee the history of Moses?
Arberry Hast thou received the story of Moses?
ShakirHas not there come to you the story of Musa?
Sarwar(Muhammad), have you heard the story of Moses
KhalifaHave you known about the history of Moses?
Hilali/KhanHas there come to you the story of Moosa (Moses)?
H/K/SaheehHas there reached you the story of Moses?
MalikHave you heard the story of Moses?[15]
QXPHas the story of Moses reached you? (Such a Revolution occurred in his times (20:9-98)).
Maulana AliHas not there come to thee the story of Moses,
Free MindsDid the story of Moses come to you?
Qaribullah Have you received the story of Moses?

79:16 اذ ناداه ربه بالواد المقدس طوى


TransliterationIth nadahu rabbuhu bialwadi almuqaddasi tuwan
LiteralWhen His Lord called him at the Valley the Holy/Sanctified Tuwan/concealed/folded within :

Yusuf AliBehold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:-
PickthalHow his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa,
Arberry When his Lord called to him in the holy valley, Towa:
ShakirWhen his Lord called upon him in the holy valley, twice,
Sarwarwhen his Lord called him in the holy valley of Tuwa,.
KhalifaHis Lord called him at the holy valley of Tuwaa.
Hilali/KhanWhen his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Toowa,
H/K/SaheehWhen his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,
MalikWhen His Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,[16]

79:17 اذهب الى فرعون انه طغى


TransliterationIthhab ila firAAawna innahu tagha
LiteralGo to Pharaoh, that he truly exceeded the limit/tyrannized .

Yusuf Ali"Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds:
Pickthal(Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled -
Arberry 'Go to Pharaoh; he has waxed insolent.
ShakirGo to Firon, surely he has become inordinate.
Sarwarsaying, "Go to the Pharaoh. He has transgressed beyond all bounds.
Khalifa"Go to Pharaoh; he has transgressed."
Hilali/KhanGo to Firaun (Pharaoh), verily, he has transgressed all bounds (in crimes, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.).
H/K/Saheeh"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
Malikand said: "Go to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds,[17]
QXP"Go to Pharaoh. Behold, he has crossed all bounds of decency."
Maulana AliGo to Pharaoh, surely he has rebelled.

Qaribullah saying 'Go to Pharaoh, he has become exceedingly insolent,

George Salego unto Pharaoh; for he is insolently wicked:

79:18 فقل هل لك الى ان تزكى


TransliterationFaqul hal laka ila an tazakka
LiteralSo say: 'Is there for you that (E) you purify/become righteous ?'

Yusuf Ali"And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?-
PickthalAnd say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)?
Arberry And say, "Hast thou the will to purify thyself;
ShakirThen say: Have you (a desire) to purify yourself:
SarwarAnd say to him, "Would you like to reform yourself?.
KhalifaTell him, "Would you not reform?
Hilali/KhanAnd say to him: "Would you purify yourself (from the sin of disbelief by becoming a believer)",
H/K/SaheehAnd say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
Malikand tell him, `Have you the desire to purify yourself?[18]
QXPAnd ask him, "Are you willing to be a better person?" ('Zaku' = Grow in goodness = Develop the 'Self' = Get rid of evil behavior = Attain purity = Improve in conduct = Prime the 'Self' for actualization).
Maulana AliAnd say: Wilt thou purify thyself?

Qaribullah and say: "Will you purify yourself,

George Saleand say, hast thou a desire to become just and holy?
JM RodwellAnd say, "Wouldest thou become just?

Asadand say[unto him], 'Art thou desirous of attaining to purity?



an-Nazi'at 079:019

79:19 واهديك الى ربك فتخشى


TransliterationWaahdiyaka ila rabbika fatakhsha
Literal'And I guide you to your Lord so you fear.'

Yusuf Ali"'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'"
PickthalThen I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).
Arberry and that I should guide thee to thy Lord, then thou shalt fear?"'
ShakirAnd I will guide you to your Lord so that you should fear.
SarwarI shall guide you to your Lord so that you may perhaps have fear of Him".
Khalifa"Let me guide you to your Lord, that you may turn reverent."
Hilali/KhanAnd that I guide you to your Lord, so you should fear Him?
H/K/SaheehAnd let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
MalikIf so, I shall guide you towards your Lord, so that you may fear Him.'"[19]
QXPThen I will guide you to your Lord so that you will have some idea of His awesome Glory."
Maulana AliAnd I will guide thee to thy Lord so that thou fear (Him).
Free Minds"And I will guide you to your Lord, that you may turn reverent."
Qaribullah that I might guide you to your Lord, so that you fear (Him)."

George SaleAnd I will direct thee unto thy Lord, that thou mayest fear to transgress.
JM RodwellThen I will guide thee to thy Lord that thou mayest fear him."

Asad[If so,] then I shall guide thee towards [a cognition of] thy Sustainer, so that [henceforth] thou wilt stand in awe [of Him].'"



an-Nazi'at 079:020

79:20 فاراه الاية الكبرى


TransliterationFaarahu al-ayata alkubra
LiteralSo he showed him/made him understand the verse/evidence/sign, the greatest/biggest .

Yusuf AliThen did (Moses) show him the Great Sign.
PickthalAnd he showed him the tremendous token.
Arberry So he showed him the great sign,
ShakirSo he showed him the mighty sign.
SarwarMoses showed him the great miracle
KhalifaHe then showed him the great miracle.
Hilali/KhanThen (Moosa (Moses)) showed him the great sign (miracles).
H/K/SaheehAnd he showed him the greatest sign,
MalikThen Moses showed Pharaoh the mighty sign,[20]
QXPAnd then he presented to him the tremendous evidence of the Truth. (20:23).
Maulana AliSo he showed him the mighty sign;

AsadAnd thereupon he [went to Pharaoh and] made him aware of the great wonder [of God's grace].



an-Nazi'at 079:021

79:21 فكذب وعصى


TransliterationFakaththaba waAAasa
LiteralSo he denied/falsified , and he disobeyed.

Yusuf AliBut (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance);
PickthalBut he denied and disobeyed,
Arberry but he cried lies, and rebelled,
ShakirBut he rejected (the truth) and disobeyed.
Sarwarbut the Pharaoh rejected it and disobeyed (Moses).
KhalifaBut he disbelieved and rebelled.
Hilali/KhanBut (Firaun (Pharaoh)) belied and disobeyed;
H/K/SaheehBut Pharaoh denied and disobeyed.
Malikbut he denied and disobeyed.[21]
QXPBut he denied and haughtily rejected.
Maulana AliBut he denied and disobeyed.

Qaribullah but he belied and disobeyed,

George SaleBut he charged Moses with imposture, and rebelled against God.

79:22 ثم ادبر يسعى


TransliterationThumma adbara yasAAa
LiteralThen he gave his back/ended/passed hastening .

Yusuf AliFurther, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).
PickthalThen turned he away in haste,
Arberry then he turned away hastily,
ShakirThen he went back hastily.
SarwarThen he turned away in a hurry,
KhalifaThen he turned away in a hurry.

LiteralSo God punished/took him (the) severe exemplary punishment (of) the end (other life) and the first/beginning.

Yusuf AliBut Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life.
PickthalSo Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.
Arberry So God seized him with the chastisement of the Last World and the First.
ShakirSo Allah seized him with the punishment of the hereafter and the former life.
SarwarSo God struck him with the torment of this life and the life hereafter.
KhalifaConsequently, GOD committed him to the retribution in the Hereafter, as well as in the first life.

Yusuf AliWhat! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it:

Arberry What, are you stronger in constitution or the heaven He built?
ShakirAre you the harder to create or the heaven? He made it.
Sarwar(People), is your creation harder for God than that of the heavens, which He created, raised and established

79:34 فاذا جاءت الطامة الكبرى

LiteralSo if/when the Calamity/Greatest Disaster/Resurrection Day the greatest came.

Yusuf AliTherefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event),-
PickthalBut when the great disaster cometh,
Arberry Then, when the Great Catastrophe comes
ShakirBut when the great predominating calamity comes;
SarwarOn the day when the great calamity comes,
KhalifaThen, when the great blow comes.
Hilali/KhanBut when there comes the greatest catastrophe (i.e. the Day of Recompense, etc.),

Yusuf AliThe Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for,
PickthalThe day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour,
Arberry upon the day when man shall remember what he has striven,
ShakirThe day on which man shall recollect what he strove after,
Sarwarthe human being will recall whatever he has done.
KhalifaThat is the day when the human will remember everything he did.
Hilali/KhanThe Day when man shall remember what he strove for,

79:36 وبرزت الجحيم لمن يرى

LiteralAnd the Hell was made to emerge to who sees/understands.

Yusuf AliAnd Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see,-
PickthalAnd hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth,
Arberry and Hell is advanced for whoever sees,
ShakirAnd the hell shall be made manifest to him who sees
SarwarHell fire will become visible for those who would see it.
KhalifaHell will be brought into existence.
Hilali/KhanAnd Hell-fire shall be made apparent in full view for (every) one who sees,
H/K/SaheehAnd Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see
MalikWhen hell shall be placed in full view of all,[36]
QXPAnd the Insurmountable Barrier will stand before him who finds it before him (he failed to prime his 'Self' for the felicitous development in the Hereafter (29:54), (39:48), (82:16)).
Maulana AliAnd hell is made manifest to him who sees.

Qaribullah and when Hell is advanced for whoever sees,

79:37 فاما من طغى

LiteralSo but who exceeded the limit/tyrannized/became arrogant.

Yusuf AliThen, for such as had transgressed all bounds,

Arberry then as for him who was insolent
ShakirThen as for him who is inordinate,
SarwarThose who have rebelled
KhalifaAs for the one who transgressed.

ShakirAnd prefers the life of this world,

KhalifaWho was preoccupied with this life.

LiteralSo then the Hell , it is the shelter/refuge.

Yusuf AliThe Abode will be Hell-Fire;
PickthalLo! hell will be his home.
Arberry surely Hell shall be the refuge.
ShakirThen surely the hell, that is the abode.
Sarwarhell will be their dwelling.
KhalifaHell will be the abode.
Hilali/KhanVerily, his abode will be Hell-fire;
H/K/SaheehThen indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
Malikshall have his abode in hell.[39]
QXPBehold, the (foot of) the Insurmountable Barrier will be his home.

79:40 واما من خاف مقام ربه ونهى النفس عن الهوى


TransliterationWaama man khafa maqama rabbihi wanaha alnnafsa AAani alhawa
LiteralAnd but who feared his Lord's position/status and he forbid/prevented the self from the self attraction for desire .

Yusuf AliAnd for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires,
PickthalBut as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
Arberry But as for him who feared the Station of his Lord and forbade the soul its caprice,
ShakirAnd as for him who fears to stand in the presence of his Lord and forbids the soul from low desires,
SarwarHowever, those who had feared their Lord and restrained their souls from acting according to its desires.
KhalifaAs for the one who reverenced the majesty of his Lord, and enjoined the self from sinful lusts.
Hilali/KhanBut as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts.
H/K/SaheehBut as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
MalikBut he who had feared standing before his Lord and curbed his evil desires[40]
QXPBut the one who feared standing before his Sustainer and restrained his selfish desire,
Maulana AliAnd as for him who fears to stand before his Lord and restrains himself from low desires,

Qaribullah But, whosoever feared the standing before his Lord and prevented the self from desires,

George SaleBut whoso shall have dreaded the appearing before his Lord, and shall have refrained his soul from lust;

79:41 فان الجنة هي الماوى

LiteralSo then the Paradise/treed garden, it is the shelter/refuge.

Yusuf AliTheir abode will be the Garden.
PickthalLo! the Garden will be his home.
Arberry surely Paradise shall be the refuge.
ShakirThen surely the garden-- that is the abode.
SarwarParadise will be the dwelling.
KhalifaParadise will be the abode.
Hilali/KhanVerily, Paradise will be his abode.
H/K/SaheehThen indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
Malikshall have his home in paradise.[41]
QXPBehold, the Paradise will be his home.

Yusuf AliThey ask thee about the Hour,-'When will be its appointed time?
PickthalThey ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port?
Arberry They will question thee concerning the Hour, when it shall berth.
ShakirThey ask you about the hour, when it will come.
Sarwar(Muhammad), they ask you, "When will the Hour of Doom come?".
KhalifaThey ask you about the Hour, and when it will take place!
Hilali/KhanThey ask you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) about the Hour, - when will be its appointed time?
H/K/SaheehThey ask you, [O Muúammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?
MalikThey ask you about the hour: "When will it come?"[42]
QXPThey ask you of the Hour, "When will it come to pass?"

LiteralIn what you are from mentioning/remembering it (what do you know about it or its time)?

Yusuf AliWherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof?
PickthalWhy (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof?
Arberry What art thou about, to mention it?
ShakirAbout what! You are one to remind of it.
Sarwar(Muhammad), you do not know (when and how) it will come.
KhalifaIt is not you (Muhammad) who is destined to announce its time.
Hilali/KhanYou have no knowledge to say anything about it,
H/K/SaheehIn what [position] are you that you should mention it?
MalikBut it is not for you to know or tell its timing.[43]
QXPWhy? What do you have to tell them about it? (7:187), (33:63), (42:17).
Maulana AliAbout which thou remindest?

Qaribullah But how are you to know?

79:44 الى ربك منتهاها


TransliterationIla rabbika muntahaha
LiteralTo your Lord (is) its ultimate/absolute end.

Yusuf AliWith thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor.
PickthalUnto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.
Arberry Unto thy Lord is the final end of it.
ShakirTo your Lord is the goal of it.
SarwarThis matter is in the hands of your Lord.
KhalifaYour Lord decides its fate.
Hilali/KhanTo your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof?
H/K/SaheehTo your Lord is its finality.
MalikOnly your Lord knows when it will come.[44]
QXPUnto your Lord is the culmination of it. (53:42).
Maulana AliTo thy Lord is the goal of it.

Qaribullah Its final end is for your Lord.

79:45 انما انت منذر من يخشاها

LiteralTruly/but you are a warner/giver of notice (to) who fears it.

TransliterationKaannahum yawma yarawnaha lam yalbathoo illa AAashiyyatan aw duhaha
LiteralAs if they are, a day/time they see it, they did not stay/remain/wait (in their graves) except an evening or its daybreak/forenoon 456

Yusuf AliThe Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn!
PickthalOn the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.
Arberry It shall be as if; on the day they see it, they have but tarried for an evening, or its forenoon.
ShakirOn the day that they see it, it will be as though they had not tarried but the latter part of a day or the early part of it.
