77:1 سورة المرسلات بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والمرسلات عرفا

LiteralAnd/by the messengers/sent/angles (F) , successively/sand dunes/elevated points .

Yusuf AliBy the (Winds) sent forth one after another (to man's profit);
PickthalBy the emissary winds, (sent) one after another
Arberry By the loosed ones successively
ShakirI swear by the emissary winds, sent one after another (for men's benefit),
SarwarBy (the angels) sent forth with the commands of God,
Khalifa(Angels) dispatched in succession.
Hilali/KhanBy the winds (or angels or the Messengers of Allah) sent forth one after another.
H/K/SaheehBy those [winds] sent forth in gusts
MalikBy the emissary winds, which are sent forth one after another.[1]
QXPWitness are these Messages (to the Sublime Truth), sent forth one after another.

77:2 فالعاصفات عصفا


TransliterationFaalAAasifati AAasfan
LiteralSo the stormy/turbulent winds , violently/turbulently.

Yusuf AliWhich then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts,
PickthalBy the raging hurricanes,
Arberry storming tempestuously
ShakirBy the raging hurricanes,
Sarwarby (the angels) as swift as blowing winds,
KhalifaTo drive the wind.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the winds that blow violently,
H/K/SaheehAnd the winds that blow violently
MalikBy the raging hurricanes.[2]
QXPAs they gain strength like a tempest.
Maulana AliThen those driving off the chaff!

JM RodwellAnd the swift in their swiftness;

Asadand then storming on with a tempest's force!



al-Mursalat 077:003

77:3 والناشرات نشرا


TransliterationWaalnnashirati nashran
LiteralAnd/by the spreading/extending/winds (for clouds) , spreading out/extending.

Yusuf AliAnd scatter (things) far and wide;
PickthalBy those which cause earth's vegetation to revive;
Arberry by the scatterers scattering
ShakirWhich scatter clouds to their destined places,
Sarwarby (the angels) spreading (the words of God) far and wide,
KhalifaStir up clouds.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the winds that scatter clouds and rain;
H/K/SaheehAnd [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
MalikBy the winds that lift up and scatter the clouds to their distant places,[3]
QXPAnd spread (the Truth) far and wide.
Maulana AliAnd those spreading (goodness), far and wide!

George Saleand by those which disperse his commands, by divulging them through the earth;

al-Mursalat 077:004

77:4 فالفارقات فرقا


TransliterationFaalfariqati farqan
LiteralSo the separated clouds/separators of right and wrong , separating.

Yusuf AliThen separate them, one from another,
PickthalBy those who winnow with a winnowing,
Arberry and the severally severing
ShakirThen separate them one from another,
Sarwarby (the angels) who make a clear distinction between right and wrong
KhalifaDistribute the provisions.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the Verses (of the Quran) that separate the right from the wrong.
H/K/SaheehAnd those [angels] who bring criterion
Malikthen separate them one from another.[4]
QXPWhile distinguishing the Right from Wrong with a clear distinction.

77:5 فالملقيات ذكرا


TransliterationFaalmulqiyati thikran
LiteralSo the throwing/throwing away a reminder/remembrance (delivering messages).

Yusuf AliThen spread abroad a Message,
PickthalBy those who bring down the Reminder,
Arberry and those hurling a reminder
ShakirThen I swear by the angels who bring down the revelation,
Sarwarand by those who reveal revelations (to the prophets)
KhalifaDeliver messages.
Hilali/KhanAnd by the angels that bring the revelations to the Messengers,
H/K/SaheehAnd those [angels] who deliver a message
MalikBy those who bring down the reminder,[5]
QXPIn order to deliver the Reminder (into the hearts).

77:6 عذرا او نذرا


TransliterationAAuthran aw nuthran
LiteralAn excuse/fault or sins or (a) warning/notice.

Yusuf AliWhether of Justification or of Warning;-
PickthalTo excuse or to warn,
Arberry excusing or warning,
ShakirTo clear or to warn.
Sarwarto provide excuses for some and to give warnings to others:
KhalifaGood news, as well as warnings.
Hilali/KhanTo cut off all excuses or to warn;
H/K/SaheehAs justification or warning,
Malikeither to remove the excuse or to convey the warning.[6]
QXPWhether one erases his faults or sees the danger signs. ('Uzr' = Excuse = Justification = Good news = Reasoning = Attempt to get rid of one's shortcomings. 'Nuzr' = Warning = Posting danger signs).

al-Mursalat 077:007

77:7 انما توعدون لواقع


TransliterationInnama tooAAadoona lawaqiAAun
LiteralThat truly what you are being promised (is) happening (E) .

Yusuf AliAssuredly, what ye are promised must come to pass.
PickthalSurely that which ye are promised will befall.
Arberry surely that which you are promised is about to fall!
ShakirMost surely what you are threatened with must come to pass.
Sarwarthat whatever with which you have been warned will inevitably come to pass.
KhalifaWhat is promised will come to pass.
Hilali/KhanSurely, what you are promised must come to pass.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, what you are promised is to occur.
MalikSurely, that which you are being promised, shall be fulfilled.[7]
QXPBehold, all that you are promised in this Writ will come to pass.
Maulana AliSurely that which you are promised will come to pass.

al-Mursalat 077:008

77:8 فاذا النجوم طمست


TransliterationFa-itha alnnujoomu tumisat
LiteralSo when/if the stars/planets were eliminated/effaced .

Yusuf AliThen when the stars become dim;
PickthalSo when the stars are put out,
Arberry When the stars shall be extinguished,
ShakirSo when the stars are made to lose their light,
SarwarThen the stars will lose their light.
KhalifaThus, when the stars are put out.
Hilali/KhanThen when the stars lose their lights;
H/K/SaheehSo when the stars are obliterated
MalikIt is going to be fulfilled when the stars will lose their light,[8]
QXPSo when the stars lose their luster. (The small groups of opponents fade away).
Maulana AliSo when the stars are made to disappear,

Qaribullah When the stars are extinguished,

77:9 واذا السماء فرجت


TransliterationWa-itha alssamao furijat
LiteralAnd when/if the sky/space opened/split open .

Yusuf AliWhen the heaven is cleft asunder;
PickthalAnd when the sky is riven asunder,
Arberry when heaven shall be split
ShakirAnd when the heaven is rent asunder,
SarwarHeavens will rent asunder.
KhalifaThe sky is opened up
Hilali/KhanAnd when the heaven is cleft asunder;
H/K/SaheehAnd when the heaven is opened
Malikheaven will cleft asunder,[9]
QXPAnd when the sky is rent asunder. (Every high tyrant is decimated).

77:10 واذا الجبال نسفت


TransliterationWa-itha aljibalu nusifat
LiteralAnd when/if the mountains were uprooted and dispersed/exploded .

Yusuf AliWhen the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust;
PickthalAnd when the mountains are blown away,
Arberry when the mountains shall be scattered
ShakirAnd when the mountains are carried away as dust,
SarwarThe mountains will be blown away as dust.
KhalifaThe mountains are blown up.
Hilali/KhanAnd when the mountains are blown away;
H/K/SaheehAnd when the mountains are blown away
Malikthe mountains will crumble into dust,[10]
QXPAnd when the mountains are blown away as dust. (The great ones who enslave the weak float around like flakes of wool). (20:105), (56:5).
Maulana AliAnd when the mountains are carried away as dust,

Qaribullah and the mountains scattered,

George Saleand when the mountains shall be winnowed,
JM RodwellAnd when the mountains shall be scattered in dust,

Asadand when the mountains are scattered like dust,



al-Mursalat 077:011

77:11 واذا الرسل اقتت


TransliterationWa-itha alrrusulu oqqitat
LiteralAnd when/if the messengers were appointed a time.

Yusuf AliAnd when the messengers are (all) appointed a time (to collect);-
PickthalAnd when the messengers are brought unto their time appointed -
Arberry and when the Messengers' time is set,
ShakirAnd when the messengers are gathered at their appointed time
SarwarThe Messengers will receive their appointments.
KhalifaThe messengers are summoned.
Hilali/KhanAnd when the Messengers are gathered to their time appointed;
H/K/SaheehAnd when the messengers' time has come…
Malikand when the Messengers will be brought together at the appointed time.[11]
QXPAnd when all Messengers are summoned at the time appointed. (The unanimity of the Message of all Messengers will become evident).
Maulana AliAnd when the messengers are made to reach their appointed time,

77:12 لاي يوم اجلت


TransliterationLi-ayyi yawmin ojjilat
LiteralTo which day/time it was delayed.

Yusuf AliFor what Day are these (portents) deferred?
PickthalFor what day is the time appointed?
Arberry to what day shall they be delayed?
ShakirTo what day is the doom fixed?
SarwarIf one asks, "To which day have such calamitous events been postponed?"
KhalifaThat is the appointed day.
Hilali/KhanFor what Day are these signs postponed?
H/K/SaheehFor what Day was it postponed?
MalikFor what Day has all this been deferred?[12]

Arberry To the Day of Decision.
ShakirTo the day of decision.
Sarwarone will be told,"To the Day of Distinction".
KhalifaThe Day of Decision.
Hilali/KhanFor the Day of sorting out (the men of Paradise from the men destined for Hell).
H/K/SaheehFor the Day of Judgement.
MalikFor the Day of Judgment![13]

Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what is the Day of Sorting out?
PickthalAnd what will convey unto thee what the Day of Decision is! -
Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the Day of Decision?
ShakirAnd what will make you comprehend what the day of decision is?
SarwarWould that you knew about the Day of Judgment!
KhalifaWhat a Day of Decision!
Hilali/KhanAnd what will explain to you what is the Day of sorting out?
H/K/SaheehAnd what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
MalikAnd what will explain to you, what the Day of Judgment is?[14]
QXPAnd what will enlighten you what that Day of Decision is?
Maulana AliAnd what will make thee comprehend what the day of Decision is?

77:15 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين


TransliterationWaylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena
LiteralCalamity/scandal (on) that day to the liars/deniers/falsifiers .

Yusuf AliAh woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
PickthalWoe unto the repudiators on that day!
Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies!
ShakirWoe on that day to the rejecters.
SarwarOn that day, woe will be to those who have rejected God's revelations!
KhalifaWoe on that day to the rejectors.
Hilali/KhanWoe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!
H/K/SaheehWoe, that Day, to the deniers.
MalikWoe on that Day to the disbelievers![15]

77:16 الم نهلك الاولين

LiteralDid We not destroy the first/beginners?

Yusuf AliDid We not destroy the men of old (for their evil)?
PickthalDestroyed We not the former folk,
Arberry Did We not destroy the ancients,
ShakirDid We not destroy the former generations?
SarwarDid We not destroy the ancient people
KhalifaDid we not annihilate the earlier generations?
Hilali/KhanDid We not destroy the ancients?
H/K/SaheehDid We not destroy the former peoples?
MalikDid We not destroy the former generations for their evil deeds?[16]

77:17 ثم نتبعهم الاخرين


TransliterationThumma nutbiAAuhumu al-akhireena
LiteralThen We make them followed (by) the lasts/others .

Yusuf AliSo shall We make later (generations) follow them.
PickthalThen caused the latter folk to follow after?
Arberry and then follow them with the later folk?
ShakirThen did We follow them up with later ones.
Sarwarand make others settle after them in their land?.
KhalifaThen we made others follow them?
Hilali/KhanSo shall We make later generations to follow them.
H/K/SaheehThen We will follow them with the later ones.
MalikAnd We shall do the same to later generations who will follow them.[17]

77:18 كذلك نفعل بالمجرمين

LiteralAs/like that We make/do with the criminals/sinners.

Yusuf AliThus do We deal with men of sin.
PickthalThus deal We ever with the guilty.
Arberry So We serve the sinners.
ShakirEven thus shall We deal with the guilty.
SarwarThus do We deal with the sinful ones.
KhalifaThis is what we do to the criminals.
Hilali/KhanThus do We deal with the Mujrimoon (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, criminals, etc.)!
H/K/SaheehThus do We deal with the criminals.
MalikThus do We deal with the guilty.[18]
QXPThus do We always deal with the guilty.

77:19 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين

Yusuf AliAh woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!

al-Mursalat 077:020

77:20 الم نخلقكم من ماء مهين


TransliterationAlam nakhluqkum min ma-in maheenin
LiteralDid We not create you from despised/humiliated (discarded) water?

Yusuf AliHave We not created you from a fluid (held) despicable?-
PickthalDid We not create you from a base fluid
Arberry Did We not create you of a mean water,
ShakirDid We not create you from contemptible water?
SarwarDid We not create you from an insignificant drop of fluid
KhalifaDid we not create you from a lowly liquid?
Hilali/KhanDid We not create you from a worthless water (semen, etc.)?
H/K/SaheehDid We not create you from a liquid disdained?
MalikHave We not created you from an unworthy fluid,[20]
QXPDid We not create you from a humble fluid? (How, then, you forget your common origin and being humble to one another?)

al-Mursalat 077:021

77:21 فجعلناه في قرار مكين

LiteralSo We made/put it in a highly positioned/established settlement/affixation .

Yusuf AliThe which We placed in a place of rest, firmly fixed,
PickthalWhich We laid up in a safe abode
Arberry that We laid within a sure lodging
ShakirThen We placed it in a secure resting-place,
Sarwarand place it in a secure place
KhalifaThen we placed it in a well-protected repository.
Hilali/KhanThen We placed it in a place of safety (womb),
H/K/SaheehAnd We placed it in a firm lodging
Malikwhich We placed in a secure resting- place (womb),[21]
QXPWhich We then kept in a safe place. (23:13).

Sarwarfor an appointed time?.

77:23 فقدرنا فنعم القادرون

LiteralSo We evaluated and measured precisely, so blessed/praised (are) the capable/able .

Yusuf AliFor We do determine (according to need); for We are the best to determine (things).
PickthalThus We arranged. How excellent is Our arranging!
Arberry We determined; excellent determiners are We.
ShakirSo We proportion it-- how well are We at proportioning (things).
SarwarThus did We Plan and how excellent is Our planning!
KhalifaWe measured it precisely. We are the best designers
Hilali/KhanSo We did measure, and We are the Best to measure (the things).
H/K/SaheehAnd We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
MalikWe have estimated its term - how excellent an estimator We are![23]
QXPThus We have determined (all things). How excellent is Our determining! (Appointing due measure of all things).
Maulana AliSo We determined -- how well are We at determining!
Free MindsSo We measured, and We are the best to measure.
Qaribullah We determined, how excellent a Determiner are We!

George SaleAnd We were able to do this: For We are most powerful.
JM RodwellSuch is our power! and, how powerful are We!

AsadThus have We determined [the nature of man's creation]: and excellent indeed is Our power to determine [what is to be]!



al-Mursalat 077:024

77:24 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين


TransliterationWaylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena
LiteralCalamity/scandal (on) that day to the liars/deniers/falsifiers.

Yusuf AliAh woe, that Day! to the Rejecters of Truth!
PickthalWoe unto the repudiators on that day!
Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies!
ShakirWoe on that day to the rejecters.
SarwarOn that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected the revelations of God!
KhalifaWoe on that day to the rejectors.
Hilali/KhanWoe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!
H/K/SaheehWoe, that Day, to the deniers.
MalikWoe on that Day to the disbelievers![24]

LiteralAnd We made/put in it anchors/mountains high/towering , and We gave you drink (from) very sweet/fresh water.

Yusuf AliAnd made therein mountains standing firm, lofty (in stature); and provided for you water sweet (and wholesome)?
PickthalAnd placed therein high mountains and given you to drink sweet water therein?
Arberry Set We not therein soaring mountains? Sated you with sweetest water?

Yusuf Ali(It will be said:) "Depart ye to that which ye used to reject as false!

Yusuf Ali"(Which yields) no shade of coolness, and is of no use against the fierce Blaze.

77:32 انها ترمي بشرر كالقصر

LiteralThat it truly throws with sparks as (big) as the castle/palace .

Yusuf Ali"Indeed it throws about sparks (huge) as Forts,
PickthalLo! it throweth up sparks like the castles,

Yusuf AliThat will be a Day of Sorting out! We shall gather you together and those before (you)!
PickthalThis is the Day of Decision, We have brought you and the men of old together.
Arberry 'This is the Day of Decision; We have joined you with the ancients;
ShakirThis is the day of decision: We have gathered you and those of yore.
SarwarThat is the Day of Judgment. We will bring you together with all the ancient peoples.
KhalifaThis is the Day of Decision. We have summoned you and the previous generations.
Hilali/KhanThat will be a Day of Decision! We have brought you and the men of old together!
H/K/SaheehThis is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
MalikSuch will be the Day of Judgment. We shall assemble you and your past generations.[38]
QXPThis is the Day of Decision. We have brought you and the generations of old together.
Maulana AliThis is the day of Decision; We have gathered you and those of yore.

Qaribullah Such is the Day of Decision. We will gather you with the ancients.

77:39 فان كان لكم كيد فكيدون


TransliterationFa-in kana lakum kaydun fakeedooni
LiteralSo if (there) was for you (a) plot/conspiracy , so plot/conspire against Me .

Yusuf AliNow, if ye have a trick (or plot), use it against Me!
PickthalIf now ye have any wit, outwit Me.
Arberry if you have a trick, try you now to trick Me!'
ShakirSo if you have a plan, plan against Me (now).
SarwarIf you have any plans, use them.
KhalifaIf you have any schemes, go ahead and scheme.
Hilali/KhanSo if you have a plot, use it against Me (Allah )!
H/K/SaheehSo if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
MalikNow if you have a plot, use it against Me.[39]
QXPNow, if you have a trick, try it against Me.
Maulana AliSo if you have a plan, plan against me (now).

Qaribullah If you are cunning, then try your cunning against Me!

Yusuf AliAs to the Righteous, they shall be amidst (cool) shades and springs (of water).
PickthalLo! those who kept their duty are amid shade and fountains,
Arberry Truly the godfearing shall dwell amid shades and fountains,
ShakirSurely those who guard (against evil) shall be amid shades and fountains,
SarwarThe pious ones will rest amid the shade, springs,
KhalifaThe righteous will enjoy shade and springs.
Hilali/KhanVerily, the Muttaqoon (pious - see V.2:2) shall be amidst shades and springs.
H/K/SaheehIndeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
MalikSurely the righteous shall dwell amidst cool shades and springs[41]
QXPBehold, those who walk aright, are amid shades and springs.

77:42 وفواكه مما يشتهون

LiteralAnd fruits from what they desire/crave .

Yusuf AliAnd (they shall have) fruits,- all they desire.
PickthalAnd fruits such as they desire.
Arberry and such fruits as their hearts desire:
ShakirAnd fruits such as they desire.
Sarwarand fruits of the kind which they desire.

LiteralEat and drink pleasurable/wholesome because (of) what you were making/doing .

Yusuf Ali"Eat ye and drink ye to your heart's content: for that ye worked (Righteousness).
Pickthal(Unto them it is said:) Eat, drink and welcome, O ye blessed, in return for what ye did.
Arberry 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working.'
ShakirEat and drink pleasantly because of what you did.
Sarwar(They will be told), "Eat and drink in good health as a reward for what you have done".

Yusuf Ali(O ye unjust!) Eat ye and enjoy yourselves (but) a little while, for that ye are Sinners.

Hilali/Khan(O you disbelievers)! Eat and enjoy yourselves (in this worldly life) for a little while. Verily, you are the Mujrimoon (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, criminals, etc.).
H/K/Saheeh[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
MalikO culprits! Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while. Surely you are culprits.[46]
QXPBehold, you guilty ones! Enjoy and take your ease for a little while.

77:47 ويل يومئذ للمكذبين


TransliterationWaylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena
LiteralCalamity/scandal (on) that day to the liars/deniers/falsifiers.

Yusuf AliAh woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
PickthalWoe unto the repudiators on that day!
Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies!
ShakirWoe on that day to the rejecters.
SarwarOn that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!
KhalifaWoe on that day to the rejectors.
Hilali/KhanWoe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!
H/K/SaheehWoe, that Day, to the deniers.
MalikWoe on that Day to the disbelievers![47]

77:48 واذا قيل لهم اركعوا لايركعون


TransliterationWa-itha qeela lahumu irkaAAoo la yarkaAAoona
LiteralAnd when/if (it) was said to them: "Bow ." They do not bow .

Yusuf AliAnd when it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves!" they do not so.
PickthalWhen it is said unto them: Bow down, they bow not down!
Arberry When it is said to them, 'Prostrate yourselves!' they prostrate not.
ShakirAnd where it is said to them: Bow down, they do not bow down.

Hilali/KhanAnd when it is said to them: "Bow down yourself (in prayer)!" They bow not down (offer not their prayers) .
H/K/SaheehAnd when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
MalikWhen they are asked to bow down before Allah, they do not bow down.[48]
QXPAnd now when they are told, "Bow down", they bow not down! (They do not submit to Divine Commands).
Maulana AliAnd when it is said to them, Bow down, they bow not down.
