| Transliteration | Walaqad kaththaba allatheena min qablihim fakayfa kana nakeeri |
| Literal | And those from before them had (E) lied/denied/falsified, so how was My severity (anger) ? |
| Yusuf Ali | But indeed men before them rejected (My warning): then how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)? |
| Pickthal | And verily those before them denied, then (see) the manner of My wrath (with them)! |
| Arberry | Those that were before them also cried lies; then how was My horror! |
| Shakir | And certainly those before them rejected (the truth), then how was My disapproval. |
| Sarwar | Those who lived before them had also rejected Our warning, and how terrible was Our retribution! |
| Khalifa | Others before them have disbelieved; how terrible was My requital! |
| Hilali/Khan | And indeed those before them belied (the Messengers of Allah), then how terrible was My denial (punishment)? |
