al-`Adiyat 100:001

100:1 سورة العاديات بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والعاديات ضبحا


TransliterationWaalAAadiyati dabhan
LiteralAnd/by the panting/changing colour , attacking forces/horses.

Yusuf AliBy the (Steeds) that run, with panting (breath),
PickthalBy the snorting courses,
Arberry By the snorting chargers,
ShakirI swear by the runners breathing pantingly,
Sarwar(I swear) by the snorting chargers (of the warriors), whose hoofs strike against the rocks
KhalifaBy the fast gallopers.
Hilali/KhanBy the (steeds) that run, with panting (breath),
H/K/SaheehBy the racers, panting,
MalikBy the snorting war horses,[1]
QXPOh, the panting galloping horses of the raiders.
Maulana AliBy those running and uttering cries!
Free MindsBy the fast gallopers.
Qaribullah By the snorting runners (the horses),

George SaleBy the war-horses which run swiftly to the battle, with a panting noise;
JM RodwellBy the snorting CHARGERS!

al-`Adiyat 100:002

100:2 فالموريات قدحا


TransliterationFaalmooriyati qadhan
LiteralSo the igniters (of fire)/swayers , fire striking/sparking/decaying .

Yusuf AliAnd strike sparks of fire,
PickthalStriking sparks of fire
Arberry by the strikers of fire,
ShakirThen those that produce fire striking,
Sarwarand produce sparks
KhalifaIgniting sparks.
Hilali/KhanStriking sparks of fire (by their hooves),
H/K/SaheehAnd the producers of sparks [when] striking
Malikdashing off sparks by the strike of their hoofs,[2]
QXPSparks of fire striking (with their gallops).
Maulana AliAnd those producing fire, striking!

Qaribullah by the strikers of fire,

George Saleand by those which strike fire, by dashing their hoofs against the stones;
JM RodwellAnd those that dash off sparks of fire!

100:3 فالمغيرات صبحا


TransliterationFaalmugheerati subhan
LiteralSo the raiders/fast attacking horses (in) mornings/daybreaks.

Yusuf AliAnd push home the charge in the morning,
PickthalAnd scouring to the raid at dawn,
Arberry by the dawn-raiders
ShakirThen those that make raids at morn,
Sarwarwhile running during a raid at dawn,
KhalifaInvading (the enemy) by morning.
Hilali/KhanAnd scouring to the raid at dawn
H/K/SaheehAnd the chargers at dawn,
Malikmaking raids in the morning,[3]
QXPCharging, ambushing at dawn.
Maulana AliAnd those suddenly attacking at morn!

Qaribullah by the dawnraiders,

George Saleand by those which make a sudden incursion on the enemy early in the morning,
JM RodwellAnd those that scour to the attack at morn!

al-`Adiyat 100:004

100:4 فاثرن به نقعا


TransliterationFaatharna bihi naqAAan
LiteralSo they stirred and arose/agitated dust/splashing mud or water with it .

Yusuf AliAnd raise the dust in clouds the while,
PickthalThen, therewith, with their trail of dust,
Arberry blazing a trail of dust,
ShakirThen thereby raise dust,
Sarwarand leave behind a cloud of dust
KhalifaStriking terror therein.
Hilali/KhanAnd raise the dust in clouds the while,
H/K/SaheehStirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,
Malikand leaving a trail of dust[4]
QXPTherewith raising clouds of dust.
Maulana AliThen thereby they raise dust,
Free MindsForming clouds of dust.
Qaribullah raising a trail of dust,

George Saleand therein raise the dust,
JM RodwellAnd stir therein the dust aloft;

Asadthereby raising clouds of dust,



al-`Adiyat 100:005

100:5 فوسطن به جمعا


TransliterationFawasatna bihi jamAAan
LiteralSo they were in the middle with it all together/(in) a group .

Yusuf AliAnd penetrate forthwith into the midst (of the foe) en masse;-
PickthalCleaving, as one, the centre (of the foe),
Arberry cleaving there with a host!
ShakirThen rush thereby upon an assembly:
Sarwarwhich engulfs the enemy.
KhalifaPenetrating to the heart of their territory.
Hilali/KhanPenetrating forthwith as one into the midst (of the foe);
H/K/SaheehArriving thereby in the center collectively,
Malikas they dash into the middle of the enemy troops![5]
QXPStorming into any community.
Maulana AliThen penetrate thereby gatherings --
Free MindsPenetrating to the midst together.
Qaribullah dividing the gathering.

George Saleand therein pass through the midst of the adverse troops:
JM RodwellAnd cleave therein their midway through a host!

Asadthereby storming [blindly] into any host!



al-`Adiyat 100:006

100:6 ان الانسان لربه لكنود


TransliterationInna al-insana lirabbihi lakanoodun
LiteralThat truly the human/mankind (is) ungrateful/disobedient (E) to his Lord.

Yusuf AliTruly man is, to his Lord, ungrateful;
PickthalLo! man is an ingrate unto his Lord
Arberry Surely Man is ungrateful to his Lord,
ShakirMost surely man is ungrateful to his Lord.
SarwarThe human being is certainly ungrateful to his Lord.
KhalifaThe human being is unappreciative of his Lord.
Hilali/KhanVerily! Man (disbeliever) is ungrateful to his Lord;
H/K/SaheehIndeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.
MalikSurely man is ungrateful to his Lord;[6]
QXPBehold, man is so ungrateful to his Lord! (Robbing the fruit of others' labor).
Maulana AliSurely man is ungrateful to his Lord.
Free MindsSurely, the human being is ungrateful to his Lord.
Qaribullah Indeed, the human is ungrateful to his Lord.

George SaleVerily man is ungrateful unto his Lord;
JM RodwellTruly, Man is to his Lord ungrateful.

AsadVERILY, towards his Sustainer man is most ungrateful



al-`Adiyat 100:007

100:7 وانه على ذلك لشهيد


TransliterationWa-innahu AAala thalika lashaheedun
LiteralAnd he truly (is) on that witnessing/testifying (E).

Yusuf AliAnd to that (fact) he bears witness (by his deeds);
PickthalAnd lo! he is a witness unto that;
Arberry and surely he is a witness against that!
ShakirAnd most surely he is a witness of that.
SarwarHe himself knows this very well.
KhalifaHe bears witness to this fact.
Hilali/KhanAnd to that fact he bears witness (by his deeds);
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, he is to that a witness.
Malikand surely he himself bears witness to it,[7]
QXPAnd behold, he is a witness unto that.
Maulana AliAnd surely he is a witness of that.
Free MindsHe will indeed bear witness to this.
Qaribullah To this he himself shall bear witness.

JM RodwellAnd of this he is himself a witness;

Asadand to this, behold, he [himself] bears witness indeed:



al-`Adiyat 100:008

100:8 وانه لحب الخير لشديد


TransliterationWa-innahu lihubbi alkhayri lashadeedun
LiteralAnd that he truly to the good's/wealth's love/like (is) strong (intense) (E) (humans love excessive goodness).

Yusuf AliAnd violent is he in his love of wealth.
PickthalAnd lo! in the love of wealth he is violent.
Arberry Surely he is passionate in his love for good things.
ShakirAnd most surely he is tenacious in the love of wealth.
SarwarHe certainly has a strong love for wealth and riches.
KhalifaHe loves material things excessively.
Hilali/KhanAnd verily, he is violent in the love of wealth.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense.
Malikand surely he is violent in his love of this worldly wealth.[8]
QXPAnd behold, in the love of wealth he is ardent. (102:1-2).
Maulana AliAnd truly on account of the love of wealth he is niggardly.
Free MindsHe loves wealth tenaciously.
Qaribullah And indeed he is ardent for the love of good (wealth, becoming greedy).

George SaleAnd he is immoderate in the love of worldly good.
JM RodwellAnd truly, he is vehement in the love of this world's good.

Asadfor, verily, to the love of wealth is he most ardently devoted.



al-`Adiyat 100:009

100:9 افلا يعلم اذا بعثر مافي القبور


TransliterationAfala yaAAlamu itha buAAthira ma fee alquboori
LiteralSo does he not know when what (is) in the graves/burial places is scattered/over thrown/strewn ?

Yusuf AliDoes he not know,- when that which is in the graves is scattered abroad
PickthalKnoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth
Arberry Knows he not that when that which is in the tombs is over-thrown,
ShakirDoes he not then know when what is in the graves is raised,
SarwarDoes he not know that on the day when those in the graves are resurrected
KhalifaDoes he not realize that the day will come when the graves are opened?
Hilali/KhanKnows he not that when the contents of the graves are brought out and poured forth (all mankind is resurrected).
H/K/SaheehBut does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered
MalikIs he not aware that when those who lie in the graves will be raised to life,[9]
QXPKnows he not that all hidden things will be dug out? (Intentions, actions and material things that were robbed, and the disintegrated forms resurrected).
Maulana AliKnows he not when that which is in the graves is raised,
Free MindsDoes he not realise that when what is in the graves are scattered.
Qaribullah Does he not know that when that which is in the graves is overthrown,

George SaleDoth he not know, therefore, when that which is in the graves shall be taken forth,
JM RodwellAh! knoweth he not, that when that which is in the graves shall be laid bare,

AsadBut does he not know that [on the Last Day,] when all that is in the graves is raised and brought out,



al-`Adiyat 100:010

100:10 وحصل مافي الصدور


TransliterationWahussila ma fee alssudoori
LiteralAnd what (is) in the chests (innermosts) is recovered/collected?

Yusuf AliAnd that which is (locked up) in (human) breasts is made manifest-
PickthalAnd the secrets of the breasts are made known,
Arberry and that which is in the breasts is brought out --
ShakirAnd what is in the breasts is made apparent?
Sarwarand all that is in the hearts is made public,
KhalifaAnd all secrets are brought out.
Hilali/KhanAnd that which is in the breasts (of men) shall be made known.
H/K/SaheehAnd that within the breasts is obtained,
Malikand that what is in their breasts will be made known,[10]
QXPAnd the secrets of the hearts will be laid bare.
Maulana AliAnd that which is in the breasts is made manifest?
Free MindsAnd what is in the chests is gathered.
Qaribullah and that which is in the chest is brought out,

George Saleand that which is in men's breasts shall be brought to light,
JM RodwellAnd that which is in men's breasts shall be brought forth,

Asadand all that is [hidden] in men's hearts is bared -



al-`Adiyat 100:011

100:11 ان ربهم بهم يومئذ لخبير


TransliterationInna rabbahum bihim yawma-ithin lakhabeerun
LiteralThat truly their Lord (is) with them (on) that day expert/experienced (E).

Yusuf AliThat their Lord had been Well-acquainted with them, (even to) that Day?
PickthalOn that day will their Lord be perfectly informed concerning them.
Arberry surely on that day their Lord shall be aware of them!
ShakirMost surely their Lord that day shall be fully aware of them.
Sarwartheir Lord will examine his deeds?.
KhalifaThey will find out, on that day, that their Lord has been fully Cognizant of them.
Hilali/KhanVerily, that Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) their Lord will be Well-Acquainted with them (as to their deeds), (and will reward them for their deeds).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is [fully] Acquainted.
Maliksurely their Lord on that Day shall have full knowledge about them.[11]
QXP(They will find out) on that Day - their Lord is fully Aware of them.
Maulana AliSurely their Lord this day is Aware of them.
Free MindsThat their Lord has been fully cognizant of them?
Qaribullah indeed, on that Day their Lord will be aware of them!

George Salethat their Lord will, on that day, be fully informed concerning them?
JM RodwellVerily their Lord shall on that day be informed concerning them?

Asadthat on that Day their Sustainer [will show that He] has always been fully aware of them?
