al-Ma'un 107:001

107:1 سورة الماعون بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ ارايت الذي يكذب بالدين


TransliterationAraayta allathee yukaththibu bialddeeni
LiteralDid you see/understand who lies/denies/falsifies with the religion?

Yusuf AliSeest thou one who denies the Judgment (to come)?
PickthalHast thou observed him who belieth religion?
Arberry Hast thou seen him who cries lies to the Doom?
ShakirHave you considered him who calls the judgment a lie?
SarwarHave you seen the one who calls the religion a lie?.
KhalifaDo you know who really rejects the faith?
Hilali/KhanHave you seen him who denies the Recompense?
H/K/SaheehHave you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
MalikHave you seen the one who denies the Day of Judgment?[1]
QXPHave you seen him who proclaims allegiance to the Divine System, but denies it in action? ((53:33), (75:32-33), (95:7). 'Takzeeb' = Denying in practice).
Maulana AliHast thou seen him who belies religion?
Free MindsDo you know who rejects the system?
Qaribullah Have you seen he who belied the Recompense?

George SaleWhat thinkest thou of him who denieth the future judgement as a falsehood?
JM RodwellWHAT thinkest thou of him who treateth our RELIGION as a lie?

AsadHAST THOU ever considered [the kind of man] who gives the lie to all moral law?



al-Ma'un 107:002

107:2 فذلك الذي يدع اليتيم


TransliterationFathalika allathee yaduAAAAu alyateema
LiteralSo that (is) who turns down/repels the orphan .

Yusuf AliThen such is the (man) who repulses the orphan (with harshness),
PickthalThat is he who repelleth the orphan,
Arberry That is he who repulses the orphan
ShakirThat is the one who treats the orphan with harshness,
SarwarIt is he who turns down the orphans
KhalifaThat is the one who mistreats the orphans.
Hilali/KhanThat is he who repulses the orphan (harshly),
H/K/SaheehFor that is the one who drives away the orphan
MalikHe it is who drives away the orphan with harshness[2]
QXPBehold, that is he who repels the orphan, the widow, the helpless, the one in a lonely state. (89:10), (69:34).
Maulana AliThat is the one who is rough to the orphan,
Free MindsIt is the one who mistreats the orphans.
Qaribullah It is he who turns away the orphan

George SaleIt is he who pusheth away the orphan;
JM RodwellHe it is who trusteth away the orphan,

AsadBehold, it is this [kind of man] that thrusts the orphan away,



al-Ma'un 107:003

107:3 ولايحض على طعام المسكين


TransliterationWala yahuddu AAala taAAami almiskeeni
LiteralAnd does not urge/insight/influence on feeding the poorest of poor/poor oppressed.

Yusuf AliAnd encourages not the feeding of the indigent.
PickthalAnd urgeth not the feeding of the needy.
Arberry and urges not the feeding of the needy.
ShakirAnd does not urge (others) to feed the poor.
Sarwarand never encourages the feeding of the destitute.
KhalifaAnd does not advocate the feeding of the poor.
Hilali/KhanAnd urges not the feeding of AlMiskeen (the poor),
H/K/SaheehAnd does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
Malikand does not encourage the feeding of the poor.[3]
QXPAnd urges not the feeding of the needy. And participates not in helping those who have lost their jobs, whose businesses have stalled, and whose hard earned income is insufficient to meet their basic needs.
Maulana AliAnd urges not the feeding of the needy.
Free MindsAnd does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
Qaribullah and does not urge others to feed the needy.

George Saleand stirreth not up others to feed the poor.
JM RodwellAnd stirreth not others up to feed the poor.

Asadand feels no urge 2 to feed the needy.



al-Ma'un 107:004

107:4 فويل للمصلين


TransliterationFawaylun lilmusalleena
LiteralSo calamity/scandal/woe to the prayers (praying people).

Yusuf AliSo woe to the worshippers
PickthalAh, woe unto worshippers
Arberry So woe to those that pray
ShakirSo woe to the praying ones,
SarwarWoe to the worshippers
KhalifaAnd woe to those who observe the contact prayers (Salat) -
Hilali/KhanSo woe unto those performers of Salat (prayers) (hypocrites),
H/K/SaheehSo woe to those who pray
MalikSo woe to those who offer Salah (prayers),[4]
QXPAh, woe unto the praying ones!
Maulana AliSo woe to the praying ones,
Free MindsSo woe to those who reach out.
Qaribullah Woe to those who pray,

George SaleWoe be unto those who pray,
JM RodwellWoe to those who pray,

AsadWoe, then, unto those praying ones



al-Ma'un 107:005

107:5 الذين هم عن صلاتهم ساهون


TransliterationAllatheena hum AAan salatihim sahoona
LiteralThose whom they are about their prayers negligent/inattentive .

Yusuf AliWho are neglectful of their prayers,
PickthalWho are heedless of their prayer;
Arberry and are heedless of their prayers,
ShakirWho are unmindful of their prayers,
Sarwarwho become confused during their prayers,
Khalifawho are totally heedless of their prayers.
Hilali/KhanWho delay their Salat (prayer) from their stated fixed times,
H/K/Saheeh[But] who are heedless of their prayer
Malikbut are neglectful of their Salah (offer Prayers but disregard the very purpose of establishing Salah - to have the fear of Allah and be mindful to the needs of other people);[5]
QXPThey know not what their prayer is meant to be!
Maulana AliWho are unmindful of their prayer!
Free MindsBut who are totally heedless of their contact-method.
Qaribullah who are heedless of their prayers (delaying them from their prescribed times),

George Saleand who are negligent at their prayer;
JM RodwellBut in their prayer are careless;

Asadwhose hearts from their prayer are remote



al-Ma'un 107:006

107:6 الذين هم يراؤون


TransliterationAllatheena hum yuraoona
LiteralThose whom they are pretending/showing off (what they are not).

Yusuf AliThose who (want but) to be seen (of men),
PickthalWho would be seen (at worship)
Arberry to those who make display
ShakirWho do (good) to be seen,
Sarwarwho show off (his good deeds)
KhalifaThey only show off.
Hilali/KhanThose who do good deeds only to be seen (of men),
H/K/SaheehThose who make show [of their deeds]
Malikthose who make a show of piety[6]
QXPThey only want to be seen and praised. (9:54). (They go through motions of prayer and keep announcing it).
Maulana AliWho do (good) to be seen,
Free MindsThey only want to be seen.
Qaribullah who show off,

George Salewho play the hypocrites,
JM RodwellWho make a shew of devotion,

Asadthose who want only to be seen and praised,



al-Ma'un 107:007

107:7 ويمنعون الماعون


TransliterationWayamnaAAoona almaAAoona
LiteralAnd they prevent/stop the charity .

Yusuf AliBut refuse (to supply) (even) neighbourly needs.
PickthalYet refuse small kindnesses!
Arberry and refuse charity.
ShakirAnd withhold the necessaries of life.
Sarwarand refuse to help the needy.
KhalifaAnd they forbid charity.
Hilali/KhanAnd refuse Al-Maoon (small kindnesses e.g. salt, sugar, water, etc.).
H/K/SaheehAnd withhold [simple] assistance.
Malikand refuse to share the necessities of life.[7]
QXPAnd, with all this, they put dams before the Spring of Sustenance. ('Ma'n' = Running water. 'Mu'in' = Source of sustenance with plenty of fresh water springs. (23:50)).
Maulana AliAnd refrain from acts of kindness!
Free MindsAnd they deter from helping others.
Qaribullah and prevent the utensils of assistance.

George Saleand deny necessaries to the needy.
JM RodwellBut refuse help to the needy.

Asadand, withal, deny all assistance [to their fellow-men]!
